The global menu will return to KDE Plasma 5

Successive complaints from users of KDE Plasma 5 regarding the disappearance of global menu on desktop have been taken into account and this feature will return to the environment shortly. This menu is similar to that existing on desktops like Unity, used by Ubuntu among other Linux systems, where the options are displayed outside the application window itself (usually in one of the upper corners of the screen) and in which the KDE engineers are working.

This feature, which was supported in Plasma 4 was eliminated with the arrival of Plasma 5, has been taken as a standard today and that is why many users demand it. In the next version of Plasma 5.9 we will see this menu implemented on the desktop again.

KDE engineers are already developing the next version of the famous Plasma desktop where, in version 5.9, we will see the global system menu again. One of the developers, Sebastian Kügler, comments through a message that this function has been one of the most requested given the support it has had in previous versions and its existence on other types of desktops. Continuing it will be a priority task for the development team from now on.

Thanks to this menu the functions of the windows can be condensed again through a button, more discreet, like the one you can see in the header image of the news. In future developments it is expected to give a breath of fresh air by improving Breeze GTK, with the inclusion of new themes and icons that will arrive throughout the years 2017 and 2018.
