Light browsers

lightweight browser for low-resource machines

Are you looking for lightweight browsers to consume fewer resources while browsing the Internet? The current panorama of web browsers is dominated by Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, at least in the world of Gnu / Linux and Ubuntu, since other operating systems accommodate other web browsers but are still many years away. light from those mentioned above.

The virtues of these browsers are many, but the toll that must be paid for their use is very high, with each update Mozilla Firefox and Chrome become heavier and less affordable for machines with few resources. That is why I have compiled a list of lThe main lightest web browsers on the market. These browsers are not extremely light, as can be Links, a web browser via terminal, but they are light and adjust quite well to daily needs.

There are many web browsers and they are just as good, so I have looked for some minimum requirements to enter this list. The first of them is that they have to be to show the images and the color, that is, the web browsers via the terminal would not be valid. The second one is that they have to be in the official Ubuntu repositories. The idea is that it can be easily installed by users of different levels of knowledge, from the most novice to the most expert. Finally, we have looked for browsers that are lightweight and that support the new web standards, that is: html5, css3 and javascript.

Midori, the king of lightweight browsers

Midori is one of the lightest web browsers out there and also one of the most up-to-date that exist. The only downside to this browser is that it does not support add-ons and plugins as complex as Mozilla Firefox or Chrome. The heart of this browser is webkit, one of the two most popular and most used engines for web browsers.

Dillo, the small web browser

If Midori is the king of web browsers, Dillo is one of the smallest, not because of its size but because it is the most used web browser by mini-distributions or embedded distributions. Leap to fame for being used on Damn Small Linux. Currently it supports the new technologies of the web, although in the Ubuntu repositories there is a version that still has a problem with the css3 standard. Dillo's engine is Gzilla, a lighter engine, but less powerful than webkit.

Ubuntu Web Browser, the new confused

If we have the latest version of Ubuntu, Ubuntu TrustyTahr, we can find a version of the Ubuntu web browser. Currently it does not have much development so it is quite light and complete, although it does not have special add-ons or plugins such as Firefox or Chrome.

Netsurf, the anonymous surfer

I found this browser looking for lightweight browsers and it is not only quite popular among users with machines with few resources but it is also found in the Ubuntu repositories, so its security and stability is more than assured. Currently the only technology that does not support is CSS3, which on the other hand is quite important, but currently you have several worksets to solve these problems.

Uzbl, the web browser for parts.

Uzbl is perhaps the lightest and most current browser of all, but on the contrary it is the most modular browser, that is, for each utility we need to have a module implanted and little by little it becomes heavy, now, if we want lightness with installing uzbl core we will have achieved it. The core of this browser is based on webkit, almost like all browsers.

Conclusion

These are some of the lightest web browsers, but they are not the only ones nor perhaps they are the ones that best suit your needs, however it is a great start and a good tool to find a good alternative to the reign of Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

If you had to keep him lighter browser, Which one would you choose? Tell us about your experience or tell us which light browser you use in your day to day.

Just one thing, for those using google drive, midori cannot open google docs documents, it is enough that when I install elementary os, I immediately have to install firefox.

I personally stay with Midori, I had to leave several very old computers functional (some with only 128 ram) and I was testing many browsers and Midori was the one that had the best results, the computers handled it quite fluently and the pages were displayed correctly (even you had).

You missed Epiphany, it is even lighter than Midori and very fast. Also Qupzilla is very good and better than the ones you mentioned.

I would contribute Palemoon. On a netbook I do better than the midori, which is the other one I have installed.

I would like to know which are the browsers that have less data consumption, because I use it with a usb modem and I don't want the data to be used up so fast.

    Best regards

      Hi Edgar,
the Opera browser, in its Android version, has an option that compresses the web before downloading it to the mobile phone ... which uses very little data ... the drawback is that from time to time compression has to be disabled, because there are websites that they don't load well.
I do not know if this same method is valid for a computer.

The k-meleon browser is very fast, simple and stable with very little resource consumption when it comes to browsing WEB pages and even watching videos on You Tube... but if you want to browse with everything, watch videos on different platforms and access the new WEB pages and with the least consumption of RAM I recommend OPERA... these 2 browsers are the ones that have given me the best results using a PC with 2 Gb of RAM and Win10... that is my suggestion
