Canonical today released the 6th LTS version of Ubuntu

Ubuntu 16.04

The day has come. Canonical to release Ubuntu 16.04 LTS today, a version that will include the new "snap" package format and pure content LXD hypervisor. The version known as Xenial Xerus will be the latest version of the world's most widely used Linux operating system in computers, the Internet and clouds, although logically they cannot say the same in a mobile sector largely dominated by Android (a system that, for me, is not Linux 100% for being a Java virtual machine).

As you all know, an LTS release or Long Term Support is supported and maintained by Canonical for five years, enabling it to be more stable, reliable, secure, and cost-effective for long-term, large-scale deployments. This is the sixth LTS release of Ubuntu and it will be the first time that the platform is compatible with mainframes, the largest and most powerful operating systems.

The day has arrived: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will be released today

Xenial Xerus

New features in this release will make the faster and simpler software delivery and operations. As Dustin Kirkland says, «Adding 'snaps' for faster and simpler updates, and the LXD hypervisor container for ultra-fast and ultra-dense cloud computing, demonstrates a commitment to customer needs that puts Ubuntu as a platform for innovation and scaling«. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS snaps can be installed like other traditional .deb packages while allowing Ubuntu to maintain its development and update processes.

El snap format It is much easier to make secure and much easier to produce, and it also offers operational advantages for organizations managing many Ubuntu devices, as it will offer more robust updates and more secure applications across all form factors, from phones Up to the clouds.

Creating snaps for developers has been simplified with the introduction of a tool called «Snapcraft»That allows you to easily create and package applications from source code to .deb packages. Snaps allow developers to deliver much newer versions of their applications to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, which will solve the issue of waiting with free platforms and also allow users to remain on a stable base for longer, while enjoying of the latest versions of the applications.

LXD, a world-class cloud and computing platform container

Another key new feature is will be the launch of Lxd, the pure container hypervisor that delivers much higher densities and speeds of up to 14x for Linux guests compared to established traditional virtualization. LXD is part of LXC 2.0, the latest release of the Linux Containers project and the basis for almost all PAAS infrastructures that are in production today. Using LXD as a hypervisor for OpenStack enables higher workload density and has lower latency than other existing cloud infrastructures today.

ZFS

On the other hand, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will include support for ZFS, a combination of volume manager and file system that enables greater efficiency, cloning copy-on-write, continuous integrity checking against corrupted data, automatic file repair and data compression. ZFS-on-Linux is a mature filesystem based on work published 10 years ago by Sun Microsystems under a free software license and is widely used in cloud and container operations on Ubuntu.

Continuing with the storage issue, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS also includes CephFS, a distributed file system that provides an ideal platform for large-scale enterprise storage for open-technology cluster computing.

Ultimately, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS creates a common platform for cloud and computing container through a wide range of devices ranging from some micro-computers such as Raspberry Pi, through standard 32-bit and 64-bit Intel / AMD servers. and reaching the most powerful systems such as IBM Z, LinuxONE or POWER8. Are you ready to install it on your PC?
