The developers who are in charge of Ubuntu Mate, announced the release of the new version of the system, this being "Ubuntu Mate 20.04 LTS" and that arrives with some news and new features. Of which many of them are those that are present in the new version of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, characteristics that I will not mention.

As for the news and changes found in Ubuntu Mate 20.04 LTS we can find that the desktop environment of the distribution has been updated to the new version of Mate 1.24, along with the components that make up this environment.

Besides it developers highlight their work on improving window controls representation on HiDPI displays, irregular icon sizes in MATE Control Center and they did render fine on HiDPI screens.

Improvements in "Frame" is MATE window manager, among which A number of new features and fixes were added.

Such is the case of improvements in Xpresen support, which is correctly fixed and you no longer notice the problems that were generated in the windows when resizing and that also in this new version it is now easier to do so.

On the other hand, HiDPI rendering improvements they solve a number of rendering problems that were present in various themes and components. It is also noted that the firmware update interface was added using fwupd.

Another major change in Ubuntu Mate 20.04 LTS are the new key combinations that are integrated to perform some tasks:

  • Maximize window: Super + Up
  • Restore window: Super + Down
  • Right Title Window: Super + Right
  • Left Title Window: Super + Left

MATE Window Applets have received a number of bug fixes and new features from a community contributor. Window control icons are now dynamically loaded from the currently selected theme, rather than requiring manual user configuration. Several bugs (including major memory leaks) have also been resolved.

Moreover, in this new version we will not be able to find Compiz and Compton since they were eliminated from the delivery and that also evolution happens to replace Thunderbird

Window thumbnails are displayed on the dashboard, task switching interface (Alt-Tab), and desktop switch.

A new applet has been proposed to show notifications. Instead of Thunderbird, Evolution is used as a mail client. When installing NVIDIA drivers that can be selected in the installer, an applet is proposed to switch between different GPUs on systems with hybrid graphics (NVIDIA Optimus).

Finally another of the changes that stands out in Ubuntu Mate 20.04 LTS is the support for Remote Desktop Awareness (RDA), which it does, according to the developers:

"Be more aware of your execution context, which is why it behaves differently when running within a remote desktop session compared to when running on local hardware."

Finally if you want to know more about it, You can check the details of this new version in the following link.

The image of this new version of the system is already available for download, but because many are currently downloading this new version or updating to it, the download may be slow, I recommend you choose to perform the download by torrent since at the moment it must be much faster than the direct download.

To record the image on a USB device you can use Etcher, which is a multiplatform tool.

It would be good if in all the analyzes of the new versions (flavors, desktop) of the new Ubuntu 20.04, the support time for each of them were stated. And that they will remind people which ones do and do not support 64 and 32 bits (there are thousands of people asking this on the internet). Ubunlog It is separated from other sites in terms of information, but that detail will make more differences.

Hello! Some time ago I installed Ubuntu Mate 18.04 on my Dell Inspiron 1520 (by recommendation of foreros, so that the transition from Windows would be easy) and the truth is that I am delighted.

Today when updating I got a message “There will be no more Ubuntu releases for the i386 architecture of this system. Updates for Ubuntu 18.04 will continue until 26-04-2023. If you reinstall Ubuntu from ubuntu.com/download, you will have future updates ».

I am writing to ask you if I could install ubuntu mate 20.04 on my dell inspiron 1520 or not, and if possible, would the laptop have to be formatted and installed from usb? Or could it be upgraded from 18.04?

Thank you very much for your help!

    Carmen

There are two architectures: x386 and x64. You installed the x386 and hence the warning. What you have to do is format and install a x64 version.
