After more than a year of development, new version of GStreamer 1.16 released, which is a free multi-platform multimedia framework written in the C programming language, using the GObjec library.
gstreamer aims to create a wide range of multimedia applicationsFrom media players and audio / video file converters, to VoIP applications and transmission systems.
The GStreamer code is distributed under the LGPLv2.1 license.
Updates to the plug-ins gst-plugins-base 1.16, gst-plugins-good 1.16, gst-plugins-bad 1.16, gst-plugins-ugly 1.16, as well as the link gst-libav 1.16 and the streaming server gst- rtsp-server 1.16 are available at the same time.
At the API and ABI level, the new version is compatible with previous versions of the 1.0 branch. Binary assemblies for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows will be prepared soon (Linux is recommended to use packages from the distribution).
Main new features of GStreamer 1.16
As one of the main novelties of Gstreamer 1.16, is the addition ofl Support for AV1 video codec in Matroska (MKV) and QuickTime / MP4.
This has implemented additional AV1 configurations and expands the number of input data formats supported by the encoder.
Another novelty that stands out is support for closed captions, as well as the ability to detect and extract other types of embedded ANC data from video (Auxiliary data, additional information such as audio and metadata transmitted through digital interfaces in non-visible parts of the scan lines).
For video decoder using hardware accelerated by NVIDIA GPU has added support for VP8 / VP9 decoding And encoding support H.265 / HEVC hardware accelerated on the encoder.

Full support for Meson has been incorporated in this new version so it is now recommended to build GStreamer on all platforms. The removal of Autotools support is expected in the next branch.
The main part of GStreamer includes folders for Rust development and a module with plug-ins in Rust.
And for the basic set of plugins (GST-plugins-base) we moved GstVideoAggregator, composer and the elements of the OpenGL mixer (glvideomixer, glmixerbin, glvideomixerelement, glstereomix, glmosaic), previously found in a set of »gst-plugins- bad «.
Other changes

- The addition of a new field interleaving mode, in which each buffer is treated as a separate field in interlaced video with the separation of the upper and lower fields at the level of the buffer-bound flags.
- Matroska's Media Container Unpacker adds support for the WebM format and content encryption;
