As all Linux users will know by now, Canonical has put an end to desktop development Unity 8, which was to be used in the upcoming Ubuntu 18.04 LTS operating system. At the same time, the company announced that GNOME would become the default desktop environment for the next Ubuntu.
Although the entire community was shocked to see that Ubuntu would no longer continue with convergenceSome users appreciated Canonical's decision because in this way the developers would focus all their attention on making the most of the Ubuntu version for PCs and laptops.
On the other hand, a group of users unhappy with Canonical's decision has now launched a request for KDE Plasma to be Ubuntu's next default desktop, instead of GNOME.
Why KDE Plasma instead of GNOME?
As justified in the petition launched, KDE fans assure that the Plasma environment would give Ubuntu developers much more granular control about the overall desktop experience compared to GNOME.
On the other hand, they also state that the KDE community seems a community much more open to collective collaboration in front of the GNOME community, which would speed up improvements to the Ubuntu desktop and possibly the release of more features in less time.
Additionally, any customization that would be done to the Plasma desktop environment may also be available to users using KDE Plasma on other non-Ubuntu distributions.
Finally, in the description of the petition, they also allege that some benchmarks show that Plasma offers higher performance than the GNOME-Shell, but the truth is that regardless of the environment that is chosen, Canonical will end up optimizing it to the maximum, so we do not think that performance will be a problem in the next versions of Ubuntu.
This request comes shortly after the release of a video by the YouTube channel TuxDigital, where they present several reasons why "Ubuntu 18.04 should use KDE Plasma instead of GNOME."
An Ubuntu developer who already saw the petition on change.org He said that even if he means well, Canonical will probably not do anything about it.
Complicated decision.
I am from Gnome and I recognize at the same time that KDE is the cane. If Ubuntu were to lean towards KDE I think it would also be a success, since apart from the Apps that it brings by default, there are many more controls on the system. It is not unreasonable, you will see.
I don't agree with it leaning towards KDE, the Gnome project needs more support than KDE. In addition, Gnome with the new versions has become solid and deserves support.
I've been through almost all the desktops, Gnome, Xfce, Mate, Cinnamon, etc ... Finally I tried Plasma, with which I currently work and with which I will continue until the end of days xD. It certainly seems to me the best, at least for my HW, stability, practically without flaws in the graphic effects and very functional.
All application development for Unity 8 was based on QT libraries, the Ubuntu SDK was based on QTcreator, and KDE has a project for convergence. I don't use it, I'm going to switch from Unity to Mate, but the proposition makes sense
Well, it wouldn't be any more, the truth is that in recent years the KDE project has done a very good job, and Gnome has gone from bad to worse, for me personally it died the day they released Gnome Shell, and its philosophy of simplifying all apps to the point of absurdity, making them much less functional, in the end I ended up switching to Plasma 5 and fell in love with it.
4ever GNOME
I can see it coming if Canonical leans towards Gnome, possibly the criticisms will appear about why it did not choose KDE Plasma and if it chooses Plasma the same will happen instead of Gnome. I think it would be better to wait for the next Ubuntu LTS version to come out and support a distro instead of waging a "war" ahead of time.
I'm from KDE, but it seems to me that Ubuntu should stick with Gnome. And this is Kubuntu and now KDE has released its own Ubuntu-based subdivision (Neon) that really exploits the potential of KDE by consuming less which leaves it very agile. I went from Kubuntu to Neon and I am a happy user! For everything else there is the old and beloved terminal 😉
I should also say, Gnome needs a visual upgrade asap
Did you try kaosx?
I partly agree that KDE is not crazy as an Ubuntu desktop, although there are things that I don't like about KDE it is always much better than Unity "for me", with respect to Gnome which in its Classic version I still use they will have I have to work a lot with Shell (as long as it is the chosen one) to convince that it is the right desktop for Ubuntu.
The only thing I don't like about kde is that the super button or windows or whatever you want to call it does not work by itself, it has no function, it is a dead key, you need to do a combination of two keys to give it a function, I don't know because so much lawsuit with not assigning the same function as in other desktops to be the main menu launcher or menu of the applications that we have installed, or a menu like in windows, they are flatly fought with this key, it is nice kde but I prefer to continue with gnome, I like it better and if you use this key too.
I don't understand… It is opened with the «win» key and it is a shot. You throw whatever you want from there. Just writing something! In addition, KDE has the other means of launching apps ... You don't have to hold on to the K launcher
I have Linux Mint 18.1 and the Windows key opens the applications menu by default ...
Gustavo Boksar is not attached to the "windows" key, it is customary, in addition to combining keys to launch does not work, even the Mac have a dedicated key to launch apps, everything seems to indicate that just for bringing the windows logo they are fighting with This key, at least until a year and a half ago, which was the last time I used kde, I have not read anything about it, it already has a use, it can be done but you have to modify the assignment through a script but not natively Everyone has other means to launch the applications, even the Macbook has a direct key to launch the software, but it seems silly to me that in kde they are wasting this key.
The Windows key, in KDE 5.9, I think 5.8 also, by default, opens the application launcher. There is also Albert which is also a very powerful application launcher and you can configure its key combination to invoke easily
No offense to anyone but gross, oh is that or I'm just a Gnome fanboy
Omar, the Super key was yes before but now it has changed.

Plasma is more evolved than gnome, it is more functional, and requires fewer resources. My support for official plasma on Ubuntu.
The only redeemable thing about KDE is its color palette, its applications do not stand out from those of gnome, so much excess configuration would have to be purged since that is from the time of caves.
It would have to purge of so many configuration options, applets, and the applications do not stand out like those of gnome, I have never gotten used to KDE, it attracts me visually but I always return to unity or gnome, what if it is better than gnome is its palette of colors, unity tires with its purple, orange, black tones, the same gnome ...
Gnome, if ubuntu is already loaded with unity, with plasma it would be more loaded, I think it's more a matter of taste, that's what kubuntu is for for prokde, I am pleased with it without further controversy ...
It seems to me that everyone spoke ill of ubuntu unity now it turns out that they die because ubuntu chooses them as an environment to apply the functionalities of unity and presentation.
As I see it, it shouldn't end with the name unity, take advantage of the work it did (unity7 and unity8) use the base lubuntu to run unity compiz, choose the best applications for each environment such as gnome, kde, lxqt, xfec, etc ... ..
And in the installer I give you to choose an environment as default unity in lubuntu for people who do not want to waste their time and each environment has a unity image, that is, the panel above the global menu and the launcher indicators on the left side.
Note: I choose lubuntu lxd because it is the lightest of all.
In Gnome 4ever ✌?
Well, it should be noted that there are already enough distros already with Kde kubuntu, kdeneon, netruner, etc, although they did, it would appear kubuntu, maybe there are flavors that you need to have the opportunity to make the progress of correction and modification faster. I am kde, I have kubuntu 17.04 and This hair I would think that unity was a false positive for a long time, even the deepin desktop did not consume as much as unity, my humble opinion would be that they would take out an environment emulating the deceased fuduntu and pear os that they had with which but they no longer work
Do I like your watches?
I'd stick with Unity, the best of Ubuntu, but he listened to the Ubuntu detractors
With Gnome you can play so that there is not a very strong change compared to Unity. Using Plasma as soon as you leave Unity would be a very shocking change to the user, although it is true that it would be more beautiful. But hey, this is what Kubuntu is for historically.
