AceStream: how to install it on Ubuntu to reproduce your links

AceStream on Ubuntu

AceStream on Ubuntu

In Linux-based operating systems there are so many options that we sometimes forget to try or investigate some of the simpler ones. That is the case of the P2P program acestream, software that is not available in APT repositories or software stores, which can lead to discouragement and give up. But Canonical added an option in April 2016 that we always have to keep in mind when we want to install any software.

I speak of the snap packages which, as you well know, will allow us, among other things, to install any available software much sooner than before without sacrificing our security. Reading this you already know the simple secret that will allow us to install and enjoy the AceStream links in Ubuntu and any other operating system compatible with the Snap packages, among which are all the X-Buntu and Linux Mint, for example.

Install AceStream from its Snap package

Ace Player HD for AceStream

As any Ubuntu user should know, to install any package from an APT repository we have to type the command sudo apt install "Program" (before it was apt-get mandatory, now only optional). To install a Snap package it will only be necessary to change "apt" to "snap", so to install AceStream we will only have to open a terminal and type:

sudo snap install acestreamplayer

It will install two programs:

  • Ace Player HD: a VLC-based player that allows us to play AceStream links. It has an outdated image, but it works great. In fact, on my PC it works better than Kodi and is the option I usually choose.
  • Ace Stream HD: to play AceStream links, either in Ace Player HD or any other compatible program like Kodi, it must be running in the background. If not, any link we try to execute will give us an error.
  • Updated in 2021: now also installs a modified version of the MPV player, lighter but with fewer options.

The bad thing is that in Linux links do not usually work automatically like in Windows or Android (Updated in 2021: this already works). If we want it to work in Ace Player HD, it is best that we add it by copying and pasting in the Media / Open network location menu. If Ace Stream HD is running in the background, the options that appear on Kodi will play smoothly.

And you? Have you already managed to see AceStream content on Ubuntu?

Fantastic article, thank you. Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia. -Months ago I had run the installation of both programs, after reading here I now understand that what I was missing was to open the "AceStreamEngine" application, whose circular icon is housed at the top of the screen. What a rumba! Then simply copy the web address and paste it into "Ace Player HD" (Media / Open Ace Stream ID Content).
