Adding plasmoids in KDE

KDE Plasmoids

The plasmoids are a very important pillar of KDE as they provide a sea of functionalities to the desktop and the panel. Some are included in the default installation while others have to be installed manually.

In this post we will see how add plasmoids already installed in our system, which is simple but sometimes not so obvious for those users who come to the desktop environment based on QT libraries for the first time.

Adding plasmoids to the desktop

The first thing we have to do is unlock the graphic elements. For this, secondary click on the desk and then go to the option Unlock graphic elements.

KDE Plasmoids

Once this is done, just go to Add graphic elements. It also unlocks the option to add new panels, as can be seen in the following image:

KDE Plasmoids

In the graphic elements selector we can search for plasmoids by name.

Or by category.

Once the plasmoid we want to use is located, just double-click on it to add it to the desktop. In our case we will add the plasmoid Folder view.

Already added it looks like this:

Once we have added the plasmoids of our preference, we just have to close the selector and, if we wish, lock graphic elements again so that they do not move from their place.

Adding plasmoids to the panel

KDE Plasmoids

To add plasmoids to the panel You have to follow the same steps described above, although you will have to unlock the graphic elements from the panel by secondary clicking on it and then going to Panel Options → Unlock Graphic Elements. The rest is done in exactly the same way.
