What to do after installing Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark

Ubuntu 17.10

We already have Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark among us, a few hours after the official release of this new version, we already started with the updates and here I have a little guide for you What to do after installing Ubuntu 17.10.

How can I tell you this is just a guide made based on the most usual What is there in the community? I just hope it is to your liking and above all that it will be of great help to the new user at the start of this great distribution.

In this guide the only thing it is necessary that you have an internet connection and above all that you already have the new version of Ubuntu on your computer.

Upgrade system

Even if it sounds strange to you, it is a necessary process, because even if the system is new, the packages and dependencies with which it comes are not the most current, so it is extremely important that we have our system up to date.

To do this we just have to open a terminal and type the following:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

System language

Although from the installer we set the language with which we want our new installation to have by default, there are times when this task is not complete because some extra packages still have to be downloaded, here we will have to go to "Language Support".

Here when it opens, it will automatically check if it is necessary to download an additional translation package, if it asks you to download and install an additional one, do so, at the end of this in "Languages" and "Language Support" click "Apply to the entire system".

Install multimedia codecs

By philosophy of Ubuntu and free software does not allow the use of proprietary software within it, it is because of that does not have the default support for various audio and video formats, so it is necessary to have to install them in the system for this we open the terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Install Synaptic and Gdebi

As we already know with the recent reintegration of Gnome officially to Ubuntu, it brings with it its entire repertoire of tools, this does not exclude the Ubuntu Software Center.

But we also have other similar tools that are very helpful, such as Synaptic and Gdebi.

To install them in the system we do it with the following commands

sudo apt install synaptic apt-xapian-index gksu

sudo update-apt-xapian-index

While on your own Gdebi takes care of the installation of the .deb packages in a simpler and more efficient way.

sudo apt install gdebi

Flash and TTF fonts

Like the part of the codecs, also the proprietary sources of MS are not added to the system, but for work reasons many users make use of them. In the case of flash, it is a technology that has become obsolete with the arrival of HTML5 and CC3, but there are still websites that make use of it.

To add this support to the system, in the terminal we type:

sudo apt install xubuntu-restricted-extras icedtea-plugin libdvd-pkg ttf-mscorefonts-installer

sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg

Enable Canonical repositories and installation of proprietary drivers.

Ubuntu repositories

On the part of Ubuntu, it provides us with software directly from its repositories in which we have several options, which we must enable based on our need, Canonical Partner is one of them.

For enable this repository we must go to "Software and updates"

While inside we go to "Other software" and check the Canonical Partners option.

For the option of proprietary drivers right there within "Software and updates" we go this time to the "additional drivers" tab, here we will see that we are making use of free alternatives.

We must mark, in the event that it shows us the use of proprietary drivers, whether they are Nvidia or ATI users.

From now on the rest would be custom configurations such as adding repositories, software and dependencies.

Without further ado, I can only say that I hope this little guide has been useful to you.

I've been using it since the first beta .. it cost to get used to Gnome again .. but some updates were failing, since the RC it has been very good, and now I'm officially getting a taste for it ... Give yourself some time before criticizing. Everything is working for me ... There are only some repositories that have not yet been created for artful, but little by little they will develop ... I think the move to Gnome was a big step ... but I can't deny that my base platform and where I sit 100% comfortable is in Ubuntu Mate.

I totally agree, it won't be easy for Canonical to get it ready after radical changes. Greetings !!

I just upgraded my computer from Ubuntu 16.04 to 17.10, but typing the command sudo apt-get upgrade I get this message:
The following packages have been withheld:
    xorg
try dist-upgrade, but nothing, please help

That "blessed" message has appeared to me for years. I got bored and installed Debian 9 (9.2) and not a problem.

    2.    David yeshael said

The best way to update is doing it from scratch, since in this new version we have Wayland that has conflicts with xorg

Synaptic does not work, it installs but does not start, incredibly it does not have the option of what to do when closing the laptop screen, so it always suspends the computer when closing it. It seems that it is still half done… ..

    1.    Hector Moreau said

      Hey.

Synaptic not working on Wayland, please log out and enter Xorg. Then you will see what Synaptic works.

      Greetings.

I disagree with your recommendation to install Flash.

Few sites require it right now and I honestly think most users won't miss it.

I recommend not installing it at first because it is very possible that we will not need it and in the process we avoid having an open door to vulnerabilities. We can install it at any time if we see that we need it.

    1.    David yeshael said

It is correct, but as I comment, there are some sites that still require it, it is not necessary, but for those who occupy it, the installation method provided them.

      1.    Mr. Paquito said

        Hello david.

It is true that there are sites that still require Flash (in my opinion, most of the sites that still need it are not recommended at all), but it is also true that there are already too few to justify recommending its installation in a tutorial of this type.

Like so many other things, if it becomes necessary, which I doubt, it can be installed at any time.

Years ago it was an almost mandatory recommendation to surf the internet without problems, but today it is not. In fact, I had it installed until not too long ago, but I haven't needed it at all since I uninstalled it.

Now, it is true that the tutorial was done by you and this is just my opinion.

        Greetings.

          Hello good day.

It is true, as I mentioned it is an obsolete technology but it is still something that we should forget.

    Solution to Synaptic

Synaptic does not work in Wayland, they must log out and open in Xorg, and that is fixed.

    1.    Joseph Hair said

      Thanks, Hector
I already did it and it's still the same
I have tested the cable on the other PC and it does.

      All the best

Hello, I updated at the moment, (I had had program failures and decided to go directly to 17.10 and wait with longing for LTS 18) and in general it goes perfect, except for 3 very specific problems for which I do not have a solution: 1.- -System halted- when turning off the power supply stays on, I have to turn off with the button (I have tried to modify ACPI = off and all this that appears in many forums… and nothing). 2.- The speed of Linux at startup is the best there is, but since 17.10, I can't remove the user password screen and it takes me about a minute to recognize the mouse -wired-, it had never happened to me, it's a pain in the neck . And 3.- Amule connects, downloads files in queue, but it turns off as soon as you click on "search" and after re-installing this application it remains the same. By the way I have Nvidia -origin of all the problems ¿? ¿? - (and start on X.org, I have not tried wyland). Any solution?? Thanks greetings
