All the news included in Ubuntu 16.04 (Desktop and Server)

Ubuntu 16.04

As you all know, Canonical launched Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus last Thursday, April 21. We have already written several articles about its launch and about their new arrivals, but today we wanted to write another more organized and direct, starting by remembering that a version Long Term Support includes support for over 18 months of support included in the normal versions (the non-LTS ones). Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Core and Ubuntu Kylin will have support for patches and updates for 5 years, while the rest of the official flavors, such as the Ubuntu MATE from which a server writes, will have it for 3 years, which is until 2021 and 2019 respectively.

What's new in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

General news

  • Most are updated to GNOME 3.18.
  • GLib has been updated to version 2.48, which is the equivalent of GNOME 3.20.
  • GNOME Software replaces the Ubuntu Software Center. Now everything is much more fluid and we find packages that were not available before, such as Kodi or MAME. Without a doubt, they have eliminated one of the most negative points of Ubuntu 15.10 and earlier versions.
  • All default applications and libraries have been ported to WebKit 2.
  • GNOME Calendar have been included by default.
  • Empathy and Brasero are no longer installed by default (less bloatware).
  • Chromium has been updated to version 48.

  • Dash web searches are disabled by default.
  • HiDPI support improved.
  • Added support for more default languages.

  • Support for ZFS.
  • Support for CephFS.
  • Ubuntu 16.04 also includes the first GA release for the Nova driver for LXD (nova-lxd).
  • Many bug fixes.

What's new in LibreOffice

  • LibreOffice comes to version 5.1 with a new theme (Breeze).
  • Python improvements.

  • Writter improvements:
    • Add support for hiding blanks.
    • Mailmerge can use spreadsheets as a data source.
    • Verify text no longer closes automatically.
  • Calc improvements:
    • It has been enhanced so that you can handle "negative Y values".
    • Performance has been improved by leveraging SSe3 for summation functions.
    • Added support for exporting to PNG.
    • Search for numbers as format / displayed.

Snap format for applications

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS includes a new application format: the snap packages. Snap packages can be installed as an alternative to .deb packages. The advantage of the snap is that users will receive the updates on the same day they are available and we do not have to wait for the developers to send it to Canonical and Canonical upload them to their repositories, which can take days and can be dangerous if the update includes a security patch.

I have 2 computers ... one with Server 13.04 that is great ... the other with 15.04 that is fine, but remote access through vnc gives me problems, and there is no way to fix it. And this is what bothers me the most ... what in 13 works in 15, which is a higher version, stops working. I wanted to go (regress) to 13, but now there is a problem with partition alignment on "large" (2-tera) disks and I'm reading info. As soon as I find out about this issue of misalignment of partitions, I will update my ubuntu server, BUT FOR ATRASSSS… ¡¡¡¡

Regarding the post ... I am not going to update to 16. I do not see repairs of ambiguous problems, known to developers, and that carry over from previous versions. A visit to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?search=Search&field.status=In+Progress It gives us a general idea of the time taken to solve critical problems. And it is that in the end ... I have concluded that in 16 there is a general interest in "fine-tuning" OpenStack, otherwise, I do not see anything of interest, and if above, a "compi" who has posted, ensures that throws much more resources…. even less.

If one thing I like about gnu-linux, it is that it can work, practically, on any system, and it is not necessarily mandatory, to focus on ubuntu, because today almost all distros "are for human beings" ... Do you remember , years ago, what was an installation of Slackware or Mandrake like? Well that, fortunately, has gone down in history .. Right?

Anyway, I say goodbye, congratulating you on your blog, time and effort, to send us this interesting info ... Greetings from the Costa del Sol (today it is cloudy).

I had ubuntu 14.04 going very well. I installed 16.04, in principle many system errors, many more than 14.04, so far so good, then monitors do not recognize me, I can assume it, the "cherry on top", I install the printer and take it in "state of wait », I have googled and tried some things but it has not been solved (brother dcp 7055), conclusion I went back to 14.04
