AltYo, an excellent drop-down terminal for Ubuntu and derivatives

Altyo in Ubuntu

Altyo in Ubuntu

The use of the terminal in the system is undoubtedly something almost essential with which having direct access to it is one of the things we usually do, even though in Ubuntu and its derivatives it is possible to run it from the key combination (Ctrl + Alt + T).

On the other hand, some Linux distributions usually include drop-down terminals, which can be opened and closed from the top of our screen, just by pressing a key or its icon.

Such is the case of Manjaro or even Voyager (based on Xubuntu) of which I have already spoken here on the blog.

Many of us who have seen this type of terminals like it and postponed that we are pleased to be able to install any of these in our system.

That is why this time we are going to share with you the method to install one of these deployable terminals in our Ubuntu system.

About AltYo

AltI is a drop-down terminal emulator written in Vala and supported in GTK 3, is based on the TEV (Virtual Terminal Emulator) terminal emulator.

This terminal emulator has many settings and a standard set of features typical for most terminal emulators.

AltI can work as drop mode (drop down) and normal (windowed) mode, using hotkeys.

AltI allows you to open an unlimited number of tabs (even with long names), when the tabs lack space can be placed in multiple rows.

In addition, the tabs that are opened with this terminal emulator are fully compatible with the drag and drop option.

Between its main characteristics that we can highlight of this emulator, we can find:

  • Opens at the top of all windows
  • A shortcut key can be set
  • The order of the terminals can be changed by dragging it to the desired position with the mouse
  • The appearance of the terminal is configurable through CSS files
  • All hotkeys can be reconfigured.
  • Search option in terminal
  • Option to save terminal session (saves executed commands)
  • Multi-threading support.
  • Ability to auto-bookmark and sort by your hostname, the feature is disabled by default
  • The title of the tabs can be fully customized.
  • Highlight the terminal header parts by color (for example, highlight username and hostname)
  • Adjust terminal header, using regular expressions (eg cut off unnecessary parts).
  • Automatic start with desktop session.
