AppCenter: elementary OS launches app store

elementaryOS AppCenter

Application stores are here to stay, Ubuntu users already have theirs and now, after a lot of work, users of one of the most minimalist and eye-pleasing distributions also have it; we speak, of course, of elementary OS.

The very people behind the development of elementary OS anticipate that this first installment of the app store, simply called AppCenter, It does not have all the features that you would like to implement but that as it is, it is enough and left over for install and uninstall applications in a simple way. "It includes all the basic features necessary to provide a good user experience, such as the ability to install and remove applications, show screenshots and do simple searches," says the distribution team in the ad, adding: "The interface is very fast and easy to navigate thanks to the excellent design and technology on which we have built it.

The core and most important piece of AppCenter is package kit, the elementary OS developers decided to use PackageKit because they don't want the tool to be dependent on any distribution. "[PackageKit] allows us to develop AppCenter in a way that is independent of any distribution, which means that it can be used to install and uninstall applications on any Linux-based operating system," they say.

AppCenter will arrive in the next elementary OS installment after Luna; when you do it is expected that you already have a rating system, reviews and featured apps.

The aim of the tool is to "turn around the poor experience of installing applications on Linux", there will be a review process in which the quality of the applications will be valued in order to publish in AppCenter only those that meet certain requirements. This does not mean, however, that an elitist policy will be adopted since those applications that are not published may be searched manually by users, who will be able to install them from the repositories.

Interested in trying AppCenter? The source code of the application can be downloaded from your official repository from now on.
