Like Discover in Plasma 5.17, Dolphin will get a lot of love in December

What's new in Dolphin and other KDE apps

A few hours ago, KDE Community or, more specifically, Nate Graham posted a blog post talking about what's coming to KDE software. Unlike other times, this week they have talked about few (future) news, in fact they only mention the graphical environment once, but they have mentioned three in Dolphin, the famous file manager used by all operating systems whose graphical environment is Plasma.

One of these what's new in the Plasma file manager it is related to history. As in browsers like Firefox, from the back / forward arrows we can access all the places where we have been recently, although as they recognize they have to polish the idea. Small arrows are currently displayed that will reduce or, most likely, completely eliminate. Below you have all the news that they have mentioned this week.

Three novelties that will arrive at Dolphin 19.12

If we access the link in this week's post, we can see that Graham has included in the title "apps, apps, apps." And this is so because most of the news they talk about are exclusive to some applications, such as the following:

  • The Dolphin 19.12 back and forward buttons can be clicked and held to display a menu with the full history.
  • The visible Places panel in Dolphin and other KDE apps now replaces entries in the old "Recently Saved" section that never worked as it should with new "Recent Files" and "Recent Folders" entries that do work perfectly (Frameworks 5.63 and Dolphin 19.12 ).
  • Dolphin 19.12 allows us to choose all the available options about what will happen when we open an executable script file.

Bug fixes and performance and interface improvements

  • Kate and other text applications using the KTextEditor framework no longer show horizontal erroneous lines when using the fractional scale factor (Frameworks 5.63).
  • Fixed a bizarre rendering bug with Konsole's built-in panels (on 19.12/XNUMX) in Kate and other apps when using two high DPI displays.
  • When Gwenview 19.12 is used to cut an image with a crop aspect ratio and the cutter is adjusted using the upper left and right corners, the crop area is no longer too high a pixel.
  • Konsole 19.12's cut leading spaces feature no longer removes empty lines.
  • The System Configuration Screens page now has an improved scaling user interface - the slider now exposes the important scale factors of 1.25x and 1.75x, but allows us to choose a more granular scale factor if desired. En X11, displays a warning that applications may look weird (Plasma 5.18).
  • Okular 1.9.0 remembers the view mode, zoom settings, and sidebar settings for each document.
  • Gwenview and Spectacle, both at v19.12, have consistent user interfaces for their JPEG quality selector modes.

And when will all this come?

Unless they go back and make a change, as we will surely see with the down arrows in the Dolphin history, everything mentioned in this and other similar articles will reach the kde desktop. The question is how and when. The how we will only confirm with the official launches that will take place on these dates:

  • All the KDE Applications 19.12, among which we will have the new versions of Dolphin, Spectacle, Gwenview and Konsole mentioned here, they will arrive in December, but they have not revealed the exact day yet. Considering that they are released on Tuesday and mid-month, they will probably arrive on December 17th. Keep in mind that they usually wait to have released a couple of maintenance versions, so we will surely be able to use them in February.
  • Framework 5.63 It will arrive on October 12, but we will have to wait a few days for the new version to arrive on Discover.
  • plasma 5.18 It will be released on February 11 and, yes, we can install it the same day.

Did they mention anything this week that you would like to see on your KDE desktop?
