Audacity 3.1 has already been released and comes with various improvements and fixes

The launch of the new version of "Audacity 3.1" which provides tools for editing sound files (Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, MP3, and WAV), recording and digitizing sound, changing sound file parameters, layering tracks, and applying effects (for example, noise suppression, tempo and pitch change ).

For those unfamiliar with Audacity, you should know that this is one of the programs most emblematic of Free Software, with which we can perform audio recording and editing digitally from our computer. This application is cross-platform so it can be used on Windows, MacOS, Linux and more.

Audacity in addition to allowing us to record multiple audio sources it can also allow us to post-processing all kinds of audio, including podcasts, by adding effects like normalization, cropping, and fading in and out.

About Audacity 3.1

This new version is positioned as the first significant release that was formed after the Muse Group took over the project.

When preparing the new version, the main focus was to simplify the audio editing operation, in addition to several important improvements:

  • Were added new clip control bars that allow you to move audio clips in a project without switching to a special mode when hovering over the title in free form.
  • The functionality of "Smart clips" for trimming clips using non-destructive editing mode. The feature allows you to trim a clip by pulling the indicator that appears when you hover over the vertical edge of the clip, after which you can revert to the original uncut version at any time by simply dragging the edge back, without using the undo button and undo other changes made after trimming. Information about the trimmed parts of the clip is also saved when copying and pasting.
  • Added a new interface for loop playback.
  • A special button has been added to the panel, when pressed, you can immediately select the beginning and end of the loop in the timeline, and also move the loop area.
  • Additional context menus have been added to the interface.
  • The default settings have been changed. When you delete a clip, other clips on the same track now stay in place and don't move. Spectrogram parameters have been changed (Mel scaling method is on, frequency edge has been increased from 8000 to 20000 Hz, window size has been increased from 1024 to 2048). Changing the volume in the program no longer affects the system volume level.
  • In the Raw Import dialog box, the parameters selected by the user are saved.
  • Added a button for automatic format detection.
  • Added support for log actions (disabled by default).
  • Added the ability to generate triangle waves.

How to install Audacity 3.1 on Ubuntu and derivatives?

At the moment the application package has not yet been updated within the "ubuntuhandbook" repo, but it is a matter of hours before it is available. As soon as you are in order to install or update to this new version, all they have to do is open a terminal and in it they will type the following commands:

The first thing we are going to do is add the following repository to the system:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/audacity -y

After that we are going to execute the following command to update the packages and list of repositories:

sudo apt-get update

We are going to install the application with:

sudo apt install audacity

Install Audacity from Flatpak

Another method with which we can install this audio player in our beloved Ubuntu or one of its derivatives is with the help of Flatpak packages and type the following command in a terminal:

flatpak install --from https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org.audacityteam.Audacity.flatpakref

Finally, you can open this audio player on your system by searching for its launcher in your application menu.

In case of not finding the launcher, you can run the application with the following command:

flatpak run org.audacityteam.Audacity

If you already had the player installed by this means and you want to check if there is an update to it, you can do it by typing the following command in a terminal:

flatpak --user update org.audacityteam.Audacity

Audacity 3.0.3 was the last version without some unnecessary analytics enabled by default, but I installed this new version anyway via flatpak and disabled internet connection, and it's rock solid, working great.
