I recently saw a survey asking what was the first thing they did after installing an operating system from scratch. Among the answers there was one that was highly voted (I don't remember if it won): change the desktop background. It is not my case (well, sometimes ...), but there are many users who want to have a spectacular wallpaper on their computer. If you are one of them, Background It has been designed for you.
The name of the application is not very original. What they have done, as in many other cases, has been to use Spanish to name it, although the application is not translated into Spanish. For the rest, it is a program with which we can navigate through the database of Unsplash.com, what is known as the World's most generous community of photographers. The application is very very simple, so much so that you have to be careful not to change your wallpaper by accident.
Background, simple app to personalize our desktop with beautiful images
Once installed and opened, the app will show us something like what you see heading this article, but with a white background. We can put it in dark by clicking on the sun or moon icon in the upper right part of the window. The options that it offers us from the three points are scarce, so much so that there is only one: choose if we want it to show images vertically, in landscape or both. At the bottom we have three tabs (new in the latest version):
- Today shows us the funds that have been added today. This tab is perfect for fund "geeks" who want to see them all and keep track of everything new they add.
- Categories It shows us a section with sections like the one you will see below these lines.
- History shows us a history of what we have downloaded.
How to move around the app
As we have mentioned previously, it is a very simple app, so much so that changing the background is one click away. Once the images are presented we have three options:
- From the icon of two arrows that go in opposite directions we can enlarge the image.
- The paper plane will allow us to share the image on social networks.
- And be careful: a click on it will download it and use it without prior notice. Of course, it does warn after putting it on. Personally, I think this is a bug, but this is how it works.
How to install Background
This simple application is available on Flathub and in AppCenter (elementary OS). I recommend to continue this guide and use the Flatpak version, but we can also open a terminal and write the following:
git clone https://github.com/calo001/fondo.git && cd com.github.calo001.fondo ./app install-deps && ./app install
If we choose this installation system, to uninstall it we will have to write ./appuninstall. What do you think of Fondo?
