Communication plays an important role in our daily work. It allows you to exchange ideas, offer and receive help, among other things. If you are setting up a local area network (LAN) in your office, home or cafeteria, one of the most important aspects to take into account on the software side is the possibility of having a tool for communication between teams. We must choose a tool taking into account the time and resources that we have at hand. While many of these tools are very useful and practical, only a few are very easy to install, configure and use, without compromising security and privacy. In this article we are going to see one of these tools: BeeBEEP.

This app is from open source. It has been developed by Marco Mastroddi. With it we can talk and share files with all the people within our local area network, such as an office, your home or a Cyber-café. This application does not need a server to work, we will simply download it, unzip it and launch the application. Simple, fast and safe.

BeeBEEP is an open-source, cross-platform program and a Messenger Lan peer to peer. This application has reached its version 4.0.0 a short time ago. This is why it is a good time to see how to install it on Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, Linux Mint 18 and derivatives.

BeeBEEP Features:

ABOUT BEEEP

ABOUT CAT LAN BEEEEP

BeeBEEP is free and as indicated by its creator it will always be. It has support for Windows, MacOSX, Linux, OS / 2 and eComStation. The data you move uses encryption based on the Rijndael algorithm (AES).

Will allow us chat with all the people connected to the Lan network, both with a single user and with groups. It will allow us to create a group of favorite people. It also allows us to send these messages offline. Messages will be sent to offline users when they are online. As if that were not enough, it will allow us to save all the messages.

The program will give us the possibility of send or share our files and folders (also by drag and drop).

In its latest update, BeeBEEP 4.0 offers us many changes compared to previous versions. Here are some of them:

  • Its user interface has been redesigned.
  • Now group all the main options in the Settings menu.
  • It will give us the option to add a status description in the list of users.
  • Added information about the status in the avatar / icon of the user.
  • In this new version, chats are always opened in separate windows (individual or multiple).
  • Workgroups interface added in the Configuration / Users menu.
  • The message is now sent with the UTC timestamp and is converted to local time when received.
  • Added option to select custom icons and emoticons.

If you were already a user of this program, you will discover new features and changes that I will surely leave behind.

How to install BeeBEEP on Ubuntu 16.04 or 17.04

To begin we open the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) or looking for "Terminal" from the application launcher. When it opens we will execute the following command to add the repository Getdeb :

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu $(lsb_release -sc)-getdeb apps" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list'

Next we will configure the repository keyring using the command:

wget -q -O - http://archive.getdeb.net/getdeb-archive.key | sudo apt-key add -

To finish we are going to update our repositories and install BeeBEEP through the following commands:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install beebeep

Uninstall BeeBEEP

Removing this BeeBEEP from our system is as simple as installing it. We just have to open the terminal and run:

sudo apt remove beebeep && sudo apt autoremove

We can delete repository from GetDeb from the System Settings -> Software and Updates -> Other Programs tab.

Although BeeBEEP is easy to install, configure and also use, not a basic communication tool. It offers a wide range of features, as well as customization options. However, its main strength lies in the fact that it is a serverless multiplatform application that focuses on both privacy and security. If this sounds like what you are looking for for your Lan network, you should give this tool a try.
