Roberto J. Dohnert of Black Lab Software recently announced the availability of the first maintenance release of the new Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11 operating system.

Available about two weeks after the release of Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11, which is based on the operating system Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (Xenial Xerus) and makes use of Ubuntu 16.10 HWE kernel (Yakkety Yak), Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.0.1 seems to be an unexpected maintenance update that aims to fix some major issues that were reported by users lately.

MATE is now the default desktop environment of the main edition

The first thing users will notice when running Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.0.1 is that the GNOME 3 desktop environment was replaced by MATE, a clone of the GNOME 2 desktop designed for low-end computers or users who want to make use of a lighter interface. This is an important change that was made based on the problems that multiple users have had with the GNOME 3 desktop.

Another interesting change is the customer replacement Mozilla Thunderbird by GNOME Evolution, which is now the default mail client. This decision was made because the Google login dialog no longer works with Thunderbird. On the other hand, Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.0.1 arrives with the packages of Linux kernel 4.8.0-52.

Of course, this maintenance release of Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11 also fix various issuesin addition to improving the support for wireless networks on MacBook Air notebooks and the speed of the OpenVPN application.

The Enterprise edition of Black Lab Linux 11.0.1 should now install smoothly on SGI ICE servers without the GRUB bootloader becoming corrupt and stopping the system after installation. This version ships with Enterprise, Education, Studio, and IoT editions, which you can download directly from the official website.

However, existing users of the operating system only need to update their systems to receive all these improvements.
