Canonical releases Ubuntu 18.04.5 and Ubuntu 16.04.7 to improve the reliability, stability and security of two of its LTS versions that are still supported

Ubuntu 18.04.5 and 16.04.7

A week ago, two late, Canonical He launched Focal Fossa's first point update. All versions of Ubuntu receive updates of this type, but the LTS receive more, since they are supported for 5 years and not for 9 months like normal releases. There are currently two more LTS versions still supported, and the company that Mark Shuttleworth runs has released new images of the Bionic Beaver and Xenial Xerus that can now be downloaded as Ubuntu 18.04.5 and Ubuntu 16.04.7.

As we explained last week, these are not new versions of the operating systems, one launched in April 2018 and the other in the same month of 2016, but they are new ISO images which include all the news and improvements that have been included in recent months, more specifically those related to the reliability, stability and security of operating systems. Existing users will have received all the news introduced in these new ISOs as soon as they were ready.

Ubuntu 18.04.5 and 16.04.7 also suffered lags

They did not explain the reason, but the last three LTS versions, that is, their ISO images, of the Canonical system and all their official flavors they suffered a delay. Specifically, as reported Steve Langasek, the updated version of the Bionic Beaver should have arrived on August 6, and not the 13 as it has.

Regarding the novelties that they introduced in their day, Xenial Xerus stood out for being the first to support Snap packages, among other novelties. On the other hand, Bionic Beaver remains a favorite of many Ubuntu users and was the last to use Unity graphical environment, so fans of the desktop that Canonical created were disappointed 6 months later when the company decided to return to GNOME. In any case, the project exists Ubunty unity which is working to become an official flavor.
