Canonical releases updated Ubuntu images with compatibility for all Raspberry Pi

Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi

One of the most outstanding novelties of Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine was improved support to be able to install the operating system on the Raspberry Pi. What at first was good news for all users of one of the famous boards turned into "my joy in a well" when it was discovered that there was a problem in the Eoan Ermine kernel that prevented the use of the USB ports. But that is a thing of the past.

Canonical has released new images to mainly correct this flaw. So They have published on Canonical's official blog, specifically mentioning that now USB ports work out of the box on the 4GB version of the Raspberry Pi 4. The company that Mark Shuttleworth runs recalls there was a way to fix it, but one that is no longer needed now.

Ubuntu 19.10 on the Raspberry Pi 4 4GB, it is already possible from the beginning

With the new images, the USB ports are now fully functional on the 4GB RAM version of the Raspberry Pi 4. A kernel bug limited our official support to the 1GB and 2GB versions of the board. A workaround was proposed to enable USB on the 4GB RAM version. This bug is now fixed, and the limitation removed.

Canonical will continue to collaborate with the raspberry company and the next step will be to launch Ubuntu Server LTS and Ubuntu Core for the famous boards. Reading this, I can't help but think that this collaboration should also translate into something else, like a installation system simpler that did not force us to use the terminal. In addition, what we can install right now is Ubuntu Server, which forces us to install a graphical environment after starting the operating system for the first time.

In any case, we already have new images with improved support for the Raspberry Pi available here.
