Canonical to sponsor KDE

plasma kde kubuntu

KDE continues your progress reaching the version 16.08 and announcing with its launch that, from now on, Canonical will be a sponsor of your project. The famous desktop of GNU / Linux distributions will not be left behind with respect to others, in a movement that has been carried out to promote variety within the world of free systems.

The KDE community produces its Plasma desktops through the KDE eV organization, as well as its applications, libraries, and development frameworks. From now on, the good relationship that both organizations have enjoyed, KDE and Canonical, it will be consolidated thanks to this new collaboration agreement between the two.

Canonical has been from its origins a promoter of all free software and, among it, desktops. They have been collaborators with other major partners such as Dell, HP or Lenovo, together with those who have developed specific adaptations of their operating system for their computers and where KDE has been incorporated as the default desktop environment. This proves the close relationship that has always existed between KDE and Ubuntu and proof of this is in its specially dedicated distribution Kubuntu.

Own manager Canonical have not hesitated to say that they will support from the first moment all the technology that KDE contributes to the GNU / Linux landscape, including all its infrastructure, so that it can be included in Canonical's upcoming future plans regarding its Snaps. This will not only benefit Ubuntu, but all distributions in general, as the KDE framework will become much more open and flexible for everyone, they say.

For its part, KDE is very satisfied with the support received and its future within the panorama of the free world. They have a solid platform to build on that will benefit the entire Linux community and its application ecosystem.

KDE has garnered good reviews from its users, especially since version 5.5 of his Plasma desktop, where his improvement in stability and robustness between its applications. The current version, 5.6.4, has further refined this work to achieve a much more careful appearance in detail and performance.

Canonical seems to finally understand that great things come from partnership and knowledge sharing (you may recall that Unity probably wouldn't have seen the light of day had it not been for the KDE developers).
