Chrome 73 now available: fixes and dark mode, among others

Google Chrome

A few hours ago, Google has released Chrome 73, a new version that is already available for Linux, macOS and windows. It stands out that they have included up to 60 security improvements, which will make using the search engine's web browser more reliable while protecting our privacy. It also comes with support for dark mode, or at least it is in macOS Mojave, Apple's desktop operating system.

Kubuntu, at least in Plasma 5.15.12, also includes dark mode and I can confirm that this option does not work in the official KDE flavor of Ubuntu. I've been using dark mode since yesterday and my Chrome, installed to check it, is still milk white (that's to say). If we go to theme settings, we have a link to download new themes, but I don't see any native option to put the browser in dark mode. Therefore, this option seems to be available only for macOS and if I'm not mistaken it will be configured with the general system. Regarding this, Firefox does include a dark mode by default, but it does not work with the general settings; it must be activated manually.

Another interesting development is related to web-apps, a topic that we are talking about a lot in Ubunlog these last days: the new version will allow Chrome web apps to notify users with balloons on their icons, among which we will have notifications to read. Chrome 73 also includes new features for developers, such as support for progressive web-apps on macOS and the 60 security fixes mentioned above.

It is necessary to read something related to the consumption of resources, since the times that I have used Chrome I have noticed that my laptop, not very powerful, was worse than I would like. It is expected that in future versions Chrome will go more fluid, but it seems that we will still have to wait.

You can download Google Chrome 73 since this link. When performing the installation, it will automatically install its repository, which will allow us to always keep it updated. Feel like trying its native dark mode?
