Chrome Canary: what it is and what does this version offer for «early adopters»

Chrome Canary

When a non-English speaker hears the word 'Chrome', the first thing they have thought of for about 10 years is Google's web browser. Now, if we say "Canary" later, things are not so clear. Most of us will think that it is something from Google, while many of us will imagine that it is something related to Google Chrome. But, what is Chrome Canary? Technically, this is the "greenest" preview version that we can access.

But before continuing, since I do not want to waste your time if you only use Linux, I have to say that it is not available for you, unless in "Linux" also Android. As we have mentioned, this is the earliest trial version of the browser. To give you an idea, the latest version of Chrome Canary is already 77, while the latest stable version is the one just released Chrome 75. EVERYTHING they are going to implement is added to Canary as soon as they have it prepared, and they do this with practically no testing.

Chrome Canary offers us the latest features, but also its bugs

Chrome is available in 4 versions:

  • Stable It is the version that we can download from its website. Everything in it has been tested enough to be completely safe to use.
  • Beta It is the one that includes everything that is going to be released in the near future in the stable version. Its use is not very dangerous, but it is less stable than the final version.
  • Dev it is basically a beta that is updated much more. Any changes come to Chrome Dev sooner, which means that it has been less tested and is less stable than the beta.
  • Canary it is the most experimental version of all. As we mentioned earlier, everything they are working on is added as soon as they have it, which can translate into "expected unexpected closures". On the other hand, functions such as creating groups of colored tabs fail in Chrome 75, but it works perfectly in Chrome Canary 77. It is also true that what they fix on the one hand can break it on the other.

Like many other software, Chrome Canary not available for Linux. The reasons seem to be two: the first is that it is not a priority, while the second is that Canary is practically the same as Chromium Daily ... or so it was. Now this version of Chromium is also not available.

Chrome Canary is available for Windows and macOS from this link, the Android version is in the Google Play, we can download the beta version from here and Chrome Dev from here. Are you an early adopter and are you going to install Chrome Canary?
