Cinelerra CV and GG, a powerful video editor on Ubuntu 18.04

about cinelerra

In the next article we are going to take a look at Cinelerra. This is for many one of the best video editing programs for our Ubuntu. Next we will see how install Cinelerra-CV and Cinelerra-GG on Ubuntu 18.04. These are two free versions for video edition They also have the ability to retouch photographs and that allow us to directly import MPEG, Ogg Theora and RAW files, in addition to the most common digital video formats: avi and mov.

Cinelerra is useful for those who create content and edit it, but not so much for the simple hobbyist. This program has many features for uncompressed content, high resolution rendering and production, but it can be unfriendly to non-professionals.

Today, there are other tools much more suitable for non-professionals, such as OpenShot, KDEnlive, Kino or Lives that should be considered among non-professionals before using Cinelerra.

This program supports high fidelity audio and video, works with YUVA and RGBA color spaces. It also uses 16-bit integer and floating-point representations. It can also support video of any speed or size, being independent in resolution and frame rate. This program also offers us a video composition window that allows the user to perform the most common retouch operations.

about cinelerra GG

The GG version of Cinelerra has an official repository. We will be able to add it to our local list of repositories by typing in a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T):

sudo apt-add-repository https://cinelerra-cv.org/five/pkgs/ub18

After the previous command we will see that an error appears when updating the repositories. This is because Ubuntu has been stricter for licenses for a long time, so we will have to edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file so that the added line contains [trusted = yes]. The line we just added should look like this:

deb [trusted=yes] https://cinelerra-cv.org/five/pkgs/ub18 bionic main

After this, in the same terminal we can install the program typing:

Install cinelerra GG

sudo apt install cin

A simpler option will be to download the .deb package from the program directly from this link.

After completing the download of the .deb file, we can install it through the package manager of our system. As we would do with any other .deb file.

Uninstall Cinelerra GG

For remove the program from our system, we will only have to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and execute the following command:

sudo apt remove --autoremove cin

If we choose to install the program through its PPA, we will be able to remove it from our list by typing in the terminal:

sudo apt-add-repository -r https://cinelerra-cv.org/five/pkgs/ub18

about Cinelerra CV
