CloudReady: How to Test Chromium OS on (Almost) Any PC

CloudReady

Today, almost any computer is capable of running any operating system with ease. Things already change when we try to use a current system on an older computer, as for example happened with Ubuntu when it changed from GNOME to Unity. Typically, computers "die" for the graphics, the hard drive or some other component, but some last a long time. If you have one of these computers, it is best to install a lightweight Linux distribution, or use the proposal of CloudReady to install Chromium OS on almost any PC.

CloudReady is the version you have created neverware from Google's Chrome OS. Like the browser, Chrome OS is based on Chromium OS, an open source project, which has allowed Neverware to create its own version. The company sells a version to businesses and schools, but in reality what it sells is the support. The Home Edition has the same but they don't offer any kind of support, or that's what we read on their website.

How to install CloudReady from USB

There are installers for macOS, Chrome OS, and Windows. The company recommends the version for Windows and to install Neverware's Chromium OS from a USB we will follow these steps:

  1. Let this site.
  2. We click on «DOWNLOAD USB MAKER» to download the tool that will create the USB.
  3. We execute the downloaded file (cloudready-usb-maker.exe).
  4. We accept the Windows prompt to open it.

Download CloudReady USB Maker

  1. Next, we are going to create the USB. At the first notice, we click «Next».
  2. On the second screen, we choose the version (32 or 64bits) and click on «Next».
  3. The next step tells us that it is best not to use a SanDisk brand USB and that our pendrive must have 8 to 16GB. If we meet the requirements, we click «Next».
  1. In the next step, we mark our pendrive and click on «Next».
  2. We wait. It says it can take up to 20 minutes. The bad thing is that there is no progress bar, or I have not seen it during the creation (yes during the download). We wait patiently.
  3. Finally, we click on «Finish» to exit.

As explained in their website, the CloudReady installation is practically the same as any Linux version that we install from a Live USB: when starting the PC, we will press F2, F12 or the key that our computer uses to choose from where to start and we will start from the pendrive. I leave you with the explanatory video of the company, although you can go directly to step 2. Have you managed to install CloudReady on your PC?

And if the person does not have Windows, how does he burn the image on the Pendrive?
