CodeWeavers is a closed source software company, but it employs some WINE developers and also collaborates with the WINE project. Remember that WINE is the compatibility layer for running native Windows software on Unix systems, such as Linux. Furthermore, they are the creators of crossover, which is basically a modified WINE, with some improvements and an intuitive graphical interface for running Windows software on *nix systems. In exchange for these advantages you will have to pay for the license, which in the case of CrossOver is exclusive.
It was released in 2002 as CrossOver Office, a commercial program aimed at running popular Windows applications, such as Microsoft Office, on Linux, ChromeOS (Chromebooks), MacOS. WINE drift, as I mentioned, and includes various patches and configuration tools that are not included in the base project. Well, now the CrossOver 21.2 version of this software has been released, with considerable improvements.
CrossOver 21.2 for macOS, Linux and ChromeOS it has arrived, and it offers improvements over WINE upstream, as well as corrections of important and varied problems to give a more stable system even for production environments.
Among some of the most striking news of this version CrossOver 21.2 are:
- More than 300 WINED3D updates.
- Dozens of changes over WINE 6.0.1 and 6.0.2 versions.
- Update to Mono 7.0.
- Audio now works on both macOS and Linux for video game titles like Halo: Master Chief Collection.
- Fixed Steam update issues caused by some connection issues.
- Fixed issue with mouse control in games based on the Unity 3D graphics engine on macOS.
- Fixes for the latest Rockstar Games Launcher and Quicken updates on M1 processor machines.
- The Linux and ChromeOS ports also have their issues fixed for Microsoft's Office 365.
- Seamless installs on ChromeOS.
- Added patches to fix libldap dependency bugs on certain Linux distros, like Ubuntu 21.10.
