Coffee, an application to know the weather and the latest news

coffee website

In the next article we are going to take a look at Coffee. This is a open source project more or less recent with which we can keep up to date with news channels from all over the world. At the same time we can know the climatic conditions of our area.

Coffee is a new application for Gnu / Linux that will help us stay up to date with current news and weather. We will not have to open a new tab in our browser. This project is inspired by Android's Google Now. The application will show us a selection of current news headlines from reliable sources, as well as weather information for our current location (or any location we manually choose).

The developers of this app say that it will benefit people who just want to get a quick overview of top news articles and weather information for coffee breaks. All this without the need to load a complete news application, web browser or RSS reader.

Coffee runs in a tall vertical window that is fixed to the right side of the screen. Unfortunately you cannot resize or move this window In a simple way. The application window is also set to always display on top. For this reason it cannot be hidden with other windows.

The application has a minimalist user interface. It has a well thought-out icon set and a very visually pleasing color scheme. The weather section is perfectly separate from the news section. The configuration panel is simple and intuitive enough that it does not require any prior knowledge to be able to use it comfortably.

Its news sources are provided by: Google, BBC News and BBC Sport among others. As an interested user, more news sources can be requested to be added. The developers promise that they will. The 'settings' icon can be found in the main window under the title bar of the Ubuntu application. In this configuration section we will find the window to select the news sources, as shown in the following screenshot:

General characteristics of Coffee

  • This program is free to download and use. It is open source and makes its source code available to users on its corresponding page on GitHub.
  • The application will allow us to select between 8 different news sources. All of them are pages known to everyone.
  • The program performs a automatic location detection to be able to provide accurate weather reports.
  • Detailed weather reports provide us 5 days weather forecast. Weather forecasts are provided by Darksky. The summary that is made of the time is very attractive and simple.
  • Coffee's user interface is very good if we compare it with others that many meteorological applications for Gnu / Linux usually provide. The application that comes to mind when I talk about styling in a weather application is Cumulus. But Cumulus doesn't double as a news app.

If what we are looking for is an application to know the weather forecast that in turn allows us to be informed about the latest news, Coffee is going to be very interesting. If someone wants to know more about the characteristics of this project, they can consult the project website.

Install Coffee on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS from PPA

For install this application on our Ubuntu 16.04 system (I suppose that in later versions it will also work, but I have not been able to test it), we will only have to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and write the following sequence of commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:coffee-team/coffee && sudo apt update && sudo apt install com.github.nick92.coffee

To install and run the application in a more recent version of Ubuntu (such as 16.10, 17.04 or 17.10) I have read on some pages that users we will need download an installer from Old PPA and install it as it was done a lifetime (that is, by double clicking on the downloaded file).
