Color Picker, color picker to work from the Ubuntu desktop

about color picker

In the next article we are going to take a look at Color Picker. It's about a color picker and editor. We are going to find this available as a snap package and it is mainly focused on developers and UI designers who need to experiment or work with colors. Most development software offers its users its own color palette tool, but some lack it. In these cases, this application offers us a way to generate custom colors for the project that concerns us.

ColorPicker is a screen color picker based on the QColorDialog class of Qt. With this tool, users can identify colors, save and edit them quickly and easily.

General characteristics of Color Picker

Features of this color picker include:

These are just some of the features of this software. Its creators announce more functions and features soon. But for the moment, you can consult all those offered by this program from your page on GitHub.

Install Color Picker on Ubuntu

This process in Ubuntu is fast. We will only need enable snap packages in Ubuntu, if necessary, and install Color Picker.

Snaps are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Gnu / Linux distributions from a single build. These snaps packages can be found and installed using the instructions available on the Snap Store, the app store where Color Picker can be found.

If Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) or later, including Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver), Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) and Ubuntu 19.04 (Disco Dingo), you don't need to do anything other than install the package you are interested in. Snap is now installed and ready to go on your computer.

Even though it's always nice to know that snapd can be installed from terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) by typing the following script:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install snapd

If the previous command is executed, we will have to close session and start it again. Another possibility will be to reboot the system, to be sure that the snap paths are updated correctly.

When we are sure that we have the snap packages in Ubuntu, we can install Color Picker. This action can be carried out by opening a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and executing the following command:

color picker installation by snap

sudo snap install color-picker

Another simple possibility of installation will be open the Ubuntu software option and search for "Color picker". In the list of results that the search will return, we can find, among others, the program that interests us.

install from Ubuntu software option

Once installed, we can now search for the launcher of this program on our computer.

uninstall

To remove this program from our system, we can use the same options that we use to install it. Well be opening the Ubuntu software option and proceeding to the uninstallation or by opening a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and typing the command:

sudo snap remove color-picker

After trying this color picker, like other color pickers like Pick, I found it to be a recommended tool. Especially if you need an external application to experiment with the color options, before translating them into your projects.
