How to have the latest version of Mozilla Firefox in our Ubuntu

Mozilla Firefox

In recent months the Mozilla team has not been very cohesive, something that seems to have touched the famous browser. In recent months, with the latest versions of Mozilla Firefox, the browser has introduced some serious security bugs as well as it has incorporated interesting novelties like Pocket or as the inclusion of particular plugins such as drm or Mozilla Hello support. But this circumstance is incompatible with Ubuntu since the release of the popular distribution is every six months. In this period the browser update is slow compared to other operating systems.

However, there are other solutions to remedy this and obtain the latest version of Mozilla Firefox for our Ubuntu without having to wait for the Ubuntu update. As in many other occasions, the answer goes through the incorporation of a PPA repository. Using this PPA repository will ensure that we always have the latest version of Mozilla Firefox on our Ubuntu.

To do so, just open a terminal and type the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

After these commands the system will begin to update to the latest version of Mozilla Firefox and this will occur when a new stable version of Mozilla Firefox is released.

Although many of you think that it is not very important and that with a beta version repository it works the same or better, this in the long run creates many security holes and vulnerabilities in our system that can cause us to have serious problems, hence it is interesting and important have the latest version of Mozilla Firefox on our system and more if it is our default browser.

Personally it is one of the PPA repositories that I have in my Ubuntu and that I add after installation since unfortunately and until Ubuntu is rolling release, Mozilla Firefox update will always be late.

I thought that Firefox was updated, regardless of the version of Ubuntu, right?

That is, I use Ubuntu 14.04 and I do not have the repository added, but my version of Firefox is 4.0.3, which is the same as I have in Windows, come on, it has to be the latest version.

Taking this into account, how useful can adding the repository be?

First of all, thanks for reading us. Regarding the use or not of the repository, Ubuntu updates Mozilla Firefox as it wants, that is, if it wants as in this case, it updates its version to 40.0.3, however the other repository that I mention in the article is updated by Mozilla which releases the version when the Windows version comes out. Although in practice it can give the same result, it does not always have to be this way. Hence its mention in the article. I hope I have clarified the issue, but ask that nothing happens 😉

      Thanks, Joaquin.

I understand. I thought that it was directly Mozilla who updated Firefox, or at least, that Ubuntu released the updates as soon as Mozilla provided them. That is good to know.

Anyway, I've been using Ubuntu since 2012 and Firefox has always been up to date, more or less (never more than a week or so) behind Windows, but it has always been updated. In fact, the latest updates have been simultaneous, if not prior to the Windows version.

That's why I thought it was Mozilla's thing.

I have a problem with mozilla, previously when I was in ubuntu I was running normal but now that I tested ubuntu mate I realize that when using pages with many plugins such as facebook, mozilla goes down and its normal speed does not work, I don't know if it is because of the version ?

Buenas tardes! I am new to the UBUNTU world, my browser is Mozilla Firefox and it always asks me to update it but I have never been able to, looking for information I got here and when I followed the first step it tells me the following:
Cannot add PPA: 'ppa: ~ ubuntu-mozilla-security / ubuntu / ppa'.
ERROR: '~ ubuntu-mozilla-security' user or team does not exist.
    What should I do???
