Dress up your Ubuntu with a flat design

Ubuntu with Flat

Following Apple's push to Flat designMany development teams have also wanted to dress their operating systems like this. Of course Ubuntu is no stranger to it and With a few simple steps we can make our Ubuntu with Unity look like that.

To be able to put a theme based on the flat design we will need to have the tool installed Unity Tweak Tool that in addition to configuring our Ubuntu, it will allow us to install any theme in Ubuntu in a fast way. We will also need to have a flat theme to install. On the Internet you will find many, I personally have opted for Numix, a beautiful theme that uses the flat design very well, you can find it here and you will find the icon theme here.

We can have the Flat design in Ubuntu

Once we download the theme, we go to our home and press the «Control» + «H» key to see the hidden folders. If one appears called ".themes", fine, we unzip the theme file in that folder. If we don't have it, we create it and then unzip the theme there.

Once this is done, we open Unity Tweak Tools and go to themes, now we look for the name of Numix that if we have done it well, it should appear. Since the themes folder is under our user, the theme changes will only affect us, however if we want the flat design to reach the whole team, instead of unzipping in the /Usuario/.themes folder we will do it in the folder / usr / share / themes / which refers to the theme of the operating system.

We have to do a similar process to obtain that flat design in the icons, however in this case the folder will not be .themes but .icons. Once the operations are finished we already have our Ubuntu updated with the latest.

"The Flat design was powered by Mac OS X Yosemite although we can have it in Ubuntu" SERIOUSLY? Are we also going to give the Macintosh the original idea that Google already captured 5 years ago? Not to mention other designers and systems. Please.

"The Flat design was powered by Mac OS X Yosemite although we can have it in Ubuntu" REALLY? (I had to put the same as you, Rafael).
But, seriously? With Yosemite? The latest version of Mac? But if the one who drove this trend was Microsoft (I'm not saying it was the first, but it gave the biggest push) with its Windows 8 and an extreme flat design and the beast (in my opinion very ugly) long before Yosemite. Make it look nicer on OS X, okay, but to say that Mac is the driving force behind flat designs is going too far (and more "Apple Fanboy" than anything else).

Once again we see how Apple achieves it thanks to the media and marketing. They copy and take all the credit.
And that this is seen in a blog about Linux is even worse.

Hello, I have crossed out the unfortunate words about Apple and deleted the subtitle. The truth is that I do know that the use in Yosemite popularized and spread this design a lot, with this I am not saying that it was the creator, I really do not know who the creator was, the idea was to teach the novice to install a theme with a flat design in Ubuntu. Another thing, for Julito-Kun, is the Windows 8 interface flat or simply metro? I ask it without any acrimony or ulterior motive, is that I really thought they were different designs. Oh and thanks for reading us and for leaving your comment. Thanks 😉

When speaking of "flat", it refers to flat designs, in fact, FLAT literally translated means FLAT.
It refers to the design, not the name of the interface. Thus, Metro (or as it is called now, Modern UI) has a flat design as much as possible (flat colors without textures, straight lines ...).
The article has been much better like this hehe

    A greeting.

Joaquín, thank you and apologies. It is that as an icon and interface designer I jump when I read about the supposed "achievements" of Mac to the world of the desktop. Thank you very much 🙂

Could we use this layout on Xubuntu?
