EB corbos Linux, an Ubuntu edition for automotive systems

EB Corbos Linux

EB corbos Linux, based on Ubuntu, is an open source ECU software solution that complies with automotive industry standards

Recently the news broke that Elektrobit and Canonical announced the launch of a new distribution, called "EB corbos Linux" and which is mentioned that it will be focused on the development of electronic control units (ECU, Electronic Control Unit) for software-defined automotive technology (SDV, Software-Defined Vehicle).

The distribution provides an environment based on Ubuntu and the Linux kernel, enhanced with components to ensure compatibility with processes and standards used in the automotive industry.

“Linux is a well-established open source solution in industries ranging from large-scale enterprise and cloud systems to embedded systems for mobile communications. The automotive industry is at a point in its development where adopting open source has huge potential benefits,” said Bertrand Boisseau, automotive industry leader at Canonical. "We are excited to work with Elektrobit to bridge the gap between automotive software and open source."

Elektrobit is a global provider visionary and award-winning of integrated and connected software products and services for the automotive industry. Leader in automotive software with more than 35 years serving the industry.

Elektrobit's software powers more than five billion devices in more than 600 million vehicles and offers flexible solutions and innovations for automotive infrastructure software, connectivity and security, automated driving, and related tools. Elektrobit is a wholly owned and independently operated subsidiary of Continental.

About EB corbos Linux

It is mentioned that distribution as a product, It is intended to also be used en commercial, shipping and rail, medical and agricultural applications.

In addition to the Ubuntu components, EB corbos Linux offers an automotive software stack developed by Elektrobit, which includes a specialized SDK, a set of utilities and source texts.

The distribution can be used as a POSIX-compliant operating system to build solutions based on the AUTOSAR adaptive platform and EB corbos AdaptiveCore framework, fully integrated with EB corbos products and the EB corbos hypervisor.

Automotive applications are distributed in the form of isolated containers, This simplifies dependency management, increases flexibility for developing custom extensions, and improves maintenance efficiency.

In addition to this, it is also highlighted thatsupports running containers that are compliant with the OCI specification (Open Container Initiative). The base fill, on top of which the containers are launched, is designed as an atomically updated image, plugged in read-only mode (it is not specified in the announcement, but judging by the description, the distribution kit is built on the basis of the Ubuntu Core platform ) . Updates are delivered in OTA (over-the-air) mode.

Elektrobit offers a fully customizable software package that comes with an SDK, tools, and source code. Highly modular common binary packages are combined and configured into an application-specific solution to prevent attacks and vulnerabilities.

You'll receive ongoing support with a maintenance pack and security and other updates throughout the entire lifecycle of your projects. The Linux distribution also includes complete security lifecycle management.

It is worth mentioning that the distribution uses optimizations already applied for High Performance Computing (HPC) systems and fully supports security mechanisms provided by the Linux kernel, such as Kernel Address Space Randomization (KASLR), Forced Access Control (SELinux), cryptographic partition integrity (dm -verity) and TCB (Trust Computing Base).

Finally, if you are interested in being able to know more about it, you can consult the details in the following link

The new distribution is expected to provide automakers with a level of functionality and flexibility similar to existing enterprise and cloud solutions.
