Ebook-Viewer, a new eBook reader for Linux

Ebook Viewer

Maybe not necessary, but options are always welcome: a new e-book reader called Ebook Viewer, a GTK Python application that can open and display the contents of any file with an .epub extension. But this little application is not new at all, since it is a rewriting of another older reader called pPub.

Its development is still in a very early phase, but it already supports basic chapter navigation and lets us save the page where we have stayed to be able to read again from the same point when we read the same book again. On the other hand, as we read in your GitHub page, new functions will be implemented such as importing from other formats, jumping between chapters, chapter index based on navigation, bookmarks by book, switching between light and dark mode and the possibility of changing the text size. All of the above is planned to be introduced before the release of its first public version.

In a version that would be released later, other new features will also be introduced such as:

  • Possibility to choose the source of the eBook.
  • Content search.
  • Permanent redial.
  • Possibility of displaying book metadata.
  • Ability to edit the book's metadata.

Although we have already commented that Ebook-Viewer is still in a very early phase, if you want to try it you have to know what the packages require gir1.2-webkit-3.0, gir1.2-gtk-3.0, python3-gi (PyGObject for Python 3) that can be installed from a terminal or from any package manager. Once the dependencies are installed, we will have to clone or download the repository to our hard drive, enter its folder via terminal and run command sudo make install. Personally, it has not worked for me (it has been installed) in Elementary OS Loki, so it seems more important to say that, if you decide to try it, do not hesitate to leave your experiences in the comments.
