Although we still do not have a new version of Elementary OS, recently we have known some aspects that the next great version of this distribution based on Ubuntu will have, Elementary OS Juno. The next version corresponds to Elementary OS 0.5, thus succeeding Elementary OS 0.4.1, the latest version of Elementary OS.
This distribution looks very similar to macOS but unlike it, Elementary OS is based on Ubuntu and will continue to do so. The next big release will be based on the upcoming Ubuntu LTS, that is, Ubuntu 18.04.
This will be the foundation for Elementary OS Juno, but it won't be the only new thing in the distribution. The Elementary OS developers have indicated that they will also change the distribution's standard packaging system. In this case they will opt for snap packages, staying true to Ubuntu and its roadmap.
Elementary OS Juno will have snap packages and an Ubuntu 18.04 base
This does not mean that Elementary OS Juno abandons other types of packages but that the standard package will be the snap format and users will be able to install packages in deb format or in Flatpak format, to mention some of those compatible with this distribution. For the moment, Elementary OS developers are offering support to their users in the form of documentation to convert your applications to snap format. Possibly the immediate step is to offer an application store in this format, with its virtues and advantages over the appstore that Elementary OS currently offers.
The Elementary OS team hasn't really discovered much since Elementary OS, like the rest of Ubuntu-based distributions, will sooner or later use a universal package system, but it is indicative that we know the basis of the next version because we will know the approximate date of the next major update of Elementary OS.
I have never tried Elementary
