Elisa does not show the covers of your library? This little trick will fix it

Elisa with all covers

Except surprise that at this point nobody waits, Elisa it will become in the default music player in Kubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa. Eoan Ermine still uses Cantata, an MPD client that has its good points and bad points. Among the good things, although it is true that in the end it is not used much, we have the extra information it offers. Among the bad things, we have a design that may not suit us and that, when creating the library, can create hundreds of small files for us.

Yes, like me, you are Kubuntu users, you can do the same as a server: install and start using Elisa right away. And, incidentally, repair your music library, something that may be necessary if you have been using Cantata and its extra files. This transition can present a clear problem: the Cantata information files confuse Elisa and she may not show the covers even though we have everything correct. Here we show you how to solve this problem.

Elisa will show the covers if you do the following

The first thing we have to do is think if those files that Cantata has created they will serve us in the future. In my case, the answer is a clear "no", so I can now focus on how to make Elisa show the covers. We will achieve it like this:

  1. If we have been using Cantata, we have to delete the files it created for us. They are those that start with "._" in front of the file name. The point makes them hidden, so we must first make these files show (usually with Ctrl + H).
  2. Once the files that can confuse our Elisa have been eliminated, what we have to do is manually add the image of the cover with the name "cover.jpg" (without the quotes) in the same folder where the songs are. We can also try other applications such as Picard or VLC, which could save us a lot of work, but it does not assure us that the result is correct.
  3. Lastly, we update the library from Elisa.

As you can see from the screenshot that heads this article, my Elisa perfectly shows all covers from Slipknot records. When the files that Cantata created for me were in the folders, they did not appear, but they did when deleting them and refreshing the library.

Kubuntu's upcoming default player has a layout that I like a lot more than Cantata, and now that I can see all my covers I am delighted with the change. What do you think?
