How to enable NPAPI plugin in Firefox 52

Mozilla Firefox

The new version of Mozilla Firefox 52 has brought interesting news for many users and also many problems. This new version disables the NPAPI plugin for Firefox which causes certain add-ons to stop working.

In this aspect, plugins such as Java, Silverlight or Flash stand out, which will stop working, but only momentarily. There are still users and web applications that mainly use Java technology and that there will be problems if they use the NPAPI Java plugin. We can solve this problem by means of a fairly simple trick but difficult to see if we do not know it.

There are still web applications that use the NPAPI plugin despite its age on the Web

In order to enable the add-ons that use the NPAPI plugin, we have to go to Mozilla Firefox 52 and write the following in the address bar:

about:config

Once we press, A file will appear with several configuration chains. In this file we have to add a new Boolean string called:

plugin.load_flash_only

Once it is created, we have to assign the value "false" to this string, for our purpose to be fulfilled. We save the entire file and restart the browser. Now, after restarting the browser plugins that worked before the update will work again. If we do not have them installed, we must install them before running the application that needs them, otherwise they will not work.

You have to remember that this simple trick will only work with Mozilla Firefox 52. The next version of Mozilla Firefox, version 53, will not support this trick as the NPAPI plugin will stop working completely.

But in that situation, both Java and the developers of other add-ons will already have an update or a solution planned that allows us to run web applications and web pages without going through using a technology that is more than 20 years old.
