Feedly, an RSS reader on our desktop

Feedly, an rss reader on our desktop

Months ago Google announced the definitive closure of its product Google ReaderBefore such an announcement, many companies and software authors began to improve their products in search of the market that Google Reader left in its wake. One of the applications that has taken advantage of this customer boost the most is Feedly, rss reader supported by many platforms and especially by mobile platforms.

In recent months, almost since the announcement of the closure, Feedly It has been improving and growing exponentially, positioning itself as one of the best rss readers that exist, although it does not stand out much in the field of home desktop. But all this is not an impediment for us to use it on our desk, in the Unity dock as one more application.

We will do all this through the software of Unity Web Apps that allows us to add apps as applications in our bar.

Install Feedly on our system

To perform the installation we will have to download a package with the files since this program is not in Ubuntu repositories. We go to this website and there we will get the package we need.

Once we have downloaded and unzipped it, we head to the terminal

sudo apt-get install build-essential

with this we will install a metapackage with the necessary tools to compile any program that we need in Ubuntu. Once installed we place ourselves where the unzipped folder is located and we write in the terminal

sudo dpkg-buildpackage

After entering the root password, the creation of the deb package with the program will begin. Once the file is created we can install it through the console or we can go through the Nautilus to the file and run it with Gdebi. First of all tell you that the package is for x64 systems so if we have 32-bit Ubuntu it will not work for us.

Once installed we will have the rss reader incorporated in our upper panel, next to the Gwibber y Empathy and we will also have it anchored in our dock. If, on the other hand, you are not interested in Feedly, we have other mobile and other options. desktop options that you should already know how liferea or Akregator, the latter recommended if you use Kde.

If you don't use a rss reader, from my most sincere opinion, I recommend that you try it. It is a good tool that allows us to be informed of the latest news. And those of you who try this reader already know, enjoy it.
