Firefox 67 now available, with WebRender that will make the browser more fluid

Fast Firefox with WebRender

Today was the day marked on the calendar. Mozilla has released Firefox 67, the latest version of your web browser. It is already available from their website, but we will still have to wait a few days for it to appear in the official repositories and update its Snap package. The new version comes with interesting news, such as a WebRender that promises to increase the speed and fluidity of one of the most popular browsers on the planet.

WebRender It is a technology that allows a website to move as fast as it can, that is, at the highest number of FPS. This is achieved by rendering in a similar way to how a video game would do and a page that in Firefox 66 would look at 15-20 FPS, in Firefox 67 it will look at 60FPS. Of course, this change is being gradual, beginning its implementation in devices that are running Windows and have an Nvidia graphics card. Like other changes, the change will remotely activate on the rest of the computers.

What's New in Firefox 67

  • Ability to block cryptocurrency mining software and fingerprinting.
  • It can install more than one instance of the software, which will allow us to test the beta versions without having to touch the stable version.
  • Reduced the priority of setTimeout when loading a page.
  • Component initialization delay until after startup.
  • Unused tabs will be suspended.
  • Improved keyboard accessibility.
  • Ability to save passwords in incognito mode.
  • Now we can choose which extensions to exclude in the private tabs.
  • Added a toolbar menu for the Firefox account to provide more transparency for when in sync, sharing data between devices and with Firefox. We can customize the appearance of the menu with our own avatar.
  • Tabs can be pinned from the Page Actions menu in the address bar.
  • Firefox will show useful functions when they could benefit us.
  • Simplified access to our list of saved entries from the main menu and login and autocomplete.
  • Data imported from another browser is now available from the File menu.
  • Protection against old versions of the browser that could lead to data corruption and stability problems.
  • A new AV1 decoder has been added which will improve performance. Its name is "dav1d".
  • WebRender will gradually activate on Windows with Nvidia cards.
  • Mozilla's highest performance JavaScript compiler now supports ARM64 devices on Windows.

Other changes

  • Support for managing webcal links with 30boxes.xom has been dropped.
  • No new extension that we add to the browser will work in private windows unless we activate them in the settings.
  • We will no longer be able to upload and share screenshots through the Firefox Screenshots server. If we want to save them, we have to export them before the service closes.
  • Twemoji Mozilla font has been updated to support Emoji 11.0.
  • Font and date adjustments to accommodate the new Reiwa era in Japan.
  • Various security fixes.
  • Other changes for developers.

Firefox 67 is now available for all supported desktop systems, which are Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is expected to hit the APT repositories this week. Will you be able to wait or will you do the manual installation?
