Firefox 74 now available, with few notable new features and no Multi-Account Containers

Firefox 74

Today, March 10, Mozilla had a new release marked on the calendar and I would stop using an extension. The first has been fulfilled, the fox company has released Firefox 74, but the second will still have to wait. I'm talking about a function that had to arrive in this version and that seems to have been delayed, at least, to next month: the extension Multi-Account Containers installed by default.

It is not very clear why they have decided to back down, but they are probably preparing improvements to the function. Firefox 75, which is now in the beta channel, does not include the novelty that is in Firefox 76 (Nightly), but it is something worse than the extension: for example, it does not allow us to always open a website in the same container , something that does allow us Multi Account Containers. In any case, we are talking about the future and what is available right now is Firefox 74.

Highlights of Firefox 74

How can we read in the official news page Firefox 74 include these changes:

  • Increased security in Linux and macOS by a container technology (sand box).
  • Now it is possible to prevent accidental lashes from peeling off.
  • Support for TLS 1.0 and 1.1 has been dropped.
  • Login management has been improved with the ability to reverse alphabetic sorting (ZA Name) in Lockwise, which you can access in Logins and Passwords.
  • Now it's easier to import favorites and history from the new Microsoft Edge (based on Chromium).
  • Plugins installed by external applications can now be removed using the Plugin Manager (about: addons). In the future, only users will be able to install plugins; they cannot be installed by an application.
  • Facebook Container prevents Facebook from tracking us on the web - Facebook logins, likes, and comments are automatically blocked on non-Facebook sites. But when we need an exception, we can create one by adding custom sites to Facebook Container.
  • Firefox now provides greater privacy for voice and video calls through ICE mDNS support by cloaking the computer's IP address with a random ID in certain WebRTC scenarios.
  • Fixed issues with pinned tabs, such as some being lost. Nor should they rearrange themselves.
  • When uploading a video with a batch of photos to Instagram, the PiP switch would be positioned above the "next" button. The switch now moves, allowing you to move to the next image in the batch.
  • On Windows, Ctrl + I can now be used to open the Page Info window instead of opening the Bookmarks sidebar. Ctrl + B still opens the Bookmarks sidebar, which makes keyboard shortcuts more useful for our users.
  • Security fixes.

Firefox 74 It is now available from the Mozilla download web page, which we can access from this link. What Linux users have available from the previous link is a binary version whose main advantage is that it is updated from the same app. In the next few hours or days, the new version will reach the official repositories of most Linux distributions, among which we have Ubuntu and all its official flavors. On the other hand and for those interested, it is already available Firefox 76 on the Nightly channel.
