Firefox Send: sending encrypted files end-to-end

Firefox Send

Firefox Send

Mozilla launched Firefox Send this afternoon, new service large file sending. The first thing that comes to mind when reading the information on this release is that we are dealing with a Mozilla WeTransfer, but in which I personally trust more because it is the company in question. The service is free and Mozilla assures us that the shipment is end-to-end encrypted or end-to-endAs it is assumed that the messaging applications are encrypted and, it is also assumed, only the sender and receiver can know what the shipment contains.

If we want to send files up to 1GB, it will not be necessary to register for the service. If on the other hand we want something else, Mozilla allows you to send files up to 2.5GB. Registration also offers us other advantages that are not available without registration (or so they say because right now it seems so) and the account is compatible with Firefox Sync, Mozilla's proposal that allows us to save Firefox settings in the cloud (extensions , settings, bookmarks ...) and passwords. By "compatible" I mean that we can register with the same account and our image will even appear if we have configured it.

What does registration in Firefox Send offer us

If we register for the service we will be able to:

  • Share files up to 2.5GB.
  • Share files with more people.
  • Keep the links active for 7 days.
  • Manage shared files from any device.
  • Learn more about other Mozilla services.

Sending files is very simple:

  1. We drag a file to the window.
  2. We indicate when it expires (up to 7 days with registration ... although without registration it seems to be the same right now.)
  3. We indicate how many people can download it (up to 100 with registration, but the same as in the previous point.).
  4. We protect with password if we wish.
  5. We click on upload.
  6. We wait for it to go up to 100%.
  7. Finally, we share the link that appears on the screen.

What the receiver will see will be the following, in case we have configured a password:

When the receiver finishes the download, Firefox Send displays a button inviting you to test the service. The sender, if he has registered, can see how much time is left for it to self-destruct the shipment or you can delete it manually. In the future we will be able to make these queries from mobile applications, on Android next week.

What do you think of the new service that Mozilla has launched?
