Canonical's Dustin Kirkland attended this year's UbuCon Europe conference where he unveiled the results of a recent survey on user habits regarding Ubuntu applications, in order to determine which applications should appear by default in future versions of the operating system.

Earlier this year, Canonical published a survey to find out what users want to see in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and in future versions of this popular platform. The response from users was overwhelming, with more than 15.000 responses submitted through sites like Slashdot, Reddit, or HackerNews.

A little further down you can see a video of Dustin Kirkland revealing the results, but what we can tell you from now on is that the users want us to Mozilla Firefox be the default web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird the default mail client, VLC the default music and video player, LibreOffice the standard office suite, Gedit the default text editor and Nautilus the default file manager.

Additionally, Ubuntu users also want to see other default applications in new versions of the operating system, including the terminal emulator. GNOMETerminal, the PDF reader Evince, the image editor GIMP, the multiprotocol instant messaging client Pidgin, GNOME-Calendar, the image viewer Shotwell, Visual Studio or Eclipse IDE, the video editor Kdenlive and the screen recorder Open Broadcaster Software (OBS).

Future versions of Ubuntu may let you choose your favorite apps

In the face of this overwhelming response, Canonical is evaluating the possibility of installing some of these apps by default on Ubuntu, starting with the next Ubuntu 18.04 LTS release, scheduled for release next year.

In addition, it seems that the company is also studying the possibility that users can choose your favorite apps during the installation process.

In short, it seems that important news will arrive in the future for Ubuntu, and for now we are eager to try the next great version of the operating system, Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark), scheduled to arrive on October 19, 2017 with Linux Kernel 4.13 and the GNOME 3.26 desktop environment.
