We are continuously monitoring everything that happens in the world of "Open Source", especially when it comes to large projects such as GNOME and KDE, so today we finally have more information about the upcoming features of the GNOME 3.26 environment and we want to share them with you.
First of all, for all those who don't know yet, the GNOME 3.26 desktop environment will be called "Manchester", and its launch is scheduled for September 13, 2017.
GNOME 3.26 development has already started, and the first maintenance release should arrive next Wednesday, April 24, under the name of GNOME 3.25.1. But today the first functions and news of the new desktop environment were already revealed.
GNOME 3.26 Features
To begin with, GNOME Usage will be the new application in charge of presenting the use of system resources. This is a GNOME 3 application that will apparently affect only current applications Baobab (responsible for showing disk usage) and GNOME SystemMonitor.
Furthermore, the GNOME Control Center have a renovated designAt the same time there will be a new framework to share things on different portals and social networks.
Developer Debarshi Ray will continue to improve the GNOME Photos app with the implementation of support for importing photos from digital cameras (another feature that was not released in GNOME 3.24), and developer Felipe Borges will be in charge of adding RDP support (Remote Desktop Protocol) to the GNOME Boxes virtualization application.
Finally, it seems that the Seahorse app (for passwords and keys) will be replaced by a modern application designed for password and key management in the GNOME desktop environment.
