Focal Fossa, name and launch date confirmed

April 23, Focal Fossa release date

A few hours ago we have published an article in which we advanced that Ubuntu 20.04 would use the codename Focal Fossa. We could say that until Mark Shuttleworth comes out and says that this is the name they are going to use, we cannot take it for granted, but I seem to remember that in Disco Dingo it did not appear, but the names began to appear in the Daily Live. Taking this into account, we will say that it would be very strange if they used another animal and adjective because it is already included in the Ubuntu Wiki.

In the previous article we said that Focal Fossa has appeared as a codename for Ubuntu 20.04 on Launchpad, a platform where a lot of information about Ubuntu is collected, such as bugs and upcoming features. If I am personally skeptical of what I see in Launchpad, it is because that is where I saw that the problem of dragging and dropping articles from / to the desktop was picked up as a bug, and we already know that it is not. But the Wiki is more reliable.

Ubuntu Wiki says Focal Fossa will arrive on April 23, 2020

Canonical posted yesterday afternoon the wiki from Focal Fossa where they tell us about the Ubuntu 20.04 launch roadmap. In it, we see the following outstanding dates:

  • October 24: tools will be uploaded.
  • October 31: From the text they have added, it seems impossible to know, but it probably means that they will launch the first Daily Live.
  • November 28: role definition freeze.
  • January 9: Ubuntu testing week, optional.
  • February 27: freeze of functions. From here on, no more changes will be accepted other than to correct what they have already added or proposed.
  • March 5: another week of testing.
  • March 19: interface freeze. From here on, the Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa image is no longer touched, unless there are bugs to fix.
  • April 2: beta version.
  • April 9: kernel freeze.
  • April 16: Final Freeze and Release Candidate.
  • April 23: Release of the final and stable version of Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa.

LTS version supported for 5 years

So we already know the day to mark in red on our calendar: April 23 2020. And if you are wondering where to put the codename, we have it in two points: in the URL (wiki.ubuntu.com/FocalFossa/ ReleaseSchedule) and at the bottom of the page, where we read «FocalFossa/ ReleaseSchedule (last edit 2019-10-16 17:31:07 by adconrad ».

As for the news that it will include, almost everything we read these days is yet to be confirmed, such as the graphical environment GNOME 3.36, more than likely, the Linux kernel 5.6, I would bet on the 5.5, or the full support for ZFS as root, something that must come because it is one of the most important points of Focal Fossa. What is certain is that it will be an LTS version supported for 5 years. Until then, we'll have to put up with it Eoan Ermine which will be released in a few hours.
