folder color

In the next article we are going to take a look at Folder Color. This is a free open source application that we already talked about in this blog some time ago. With her we will be able change the color of folders in our system, using only the context menu or right-click menu of the mouse. In the following lines we are going to see how to install this application, and how to change the color of a folder in Ubuntu 20.04 in a tremendously simple way.

Sometimes it can be difficult to find the folders we want to use, when they are all the same color and we have a good number of them in our equipment. For this reason, the important folders differentiated by colors, with which to separate the different types of content or tasks, are an easy way to locate them easier and faster.

With this small program, in addition to being able to change the color of the folders one by one, we will also have the possibility to change the color of multiple folders at the same time. Its operation is so simple that we will only have to select the folders that we want to adjust with the mouse, or by holding down the key. Ctrl while we click on the folders that interest us.

folder color change folder color

Once selected, only right click on any of them and go to the submenu «Folder color». In this submenu we will be able to select a color from among those offered by the application, it will also allow us to put some emblems in the folders.

Install Folder Color on Ubuntu 20.04

For this tool to work correctly in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, we will only have to install a small compatibility package. As indicated in OMGUbuntu, the Yaru compatibility pack is not available to install from the Ubuntu software option. But if we can find it available to install from a Dedicated PPA maintained by the original author of the tool.

For add repository, we only need to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and execute the command in it:

add repo folder color Ubuntu 20.04

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costales/yaru-colors-folder-color

After updating available packages, which occurs automatically in Ubuntu 20.04, the next thing we will have to do is run this other command in the same terminal. So we can install Folder Color app and Yaru support on Ubuntu 20.04:

install folder color in Ubuntu 20.04

sudo apt install folder-color yaru-colors-folder-color

After the installation is complete, for the tool to work we must restart the file manager. We will be able to do this by closing the current session and starting it again, or we can also choose to press the key combination Alt + f2 to open the command box. In this box we will only have to write the following command:

restart nautilus

nautilus -q

In addition to changing the colors of the folders from the file explorer, another option that the application is going to offer us the possibility of quickly restoring the folders to their default color. In addition, it will allow us to establish a global color to change the color of all the folders at once, or the possibility of adding emblems to folders, such as; 'favorite', 'important' or 'in progress'.

uninstall

To remove the application from our Ubuntu 20.04 system, we can start with delete repository used for installation. We can do this by typing in the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T):

delete repository folder color

sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:costales/yaru-colors-folder-color

At this point we can move on to delete the program. To achieve this, in the same terminal we only need to execute the following command:

uninstall

sudo apt remove folder-color yaru-colors-folder-color; sudo apt autoremove

As we have just seen, Folder Color is a small program that will allow us to quickly and easily change the color of the folders on our Ubuntu system. We only need to use the submenu with the right mouse button, so this is something so simple that it is available to all users. It can get more information about this app on the project website.
