FreeCAD the 3D molder has been updated to version 0.17

FreeCAD

FreeCAD is a free and open source CAD application for its acronym in English (Computer-Aided Design) in 3D, that is, the design is computer-aided in three dimensions of the parameter type. FreeCAD is licensed under the LGPL.

This application is intended for a wide range of usabilityFrom the mechanical engineer to the user of a 3D printer who wants to design a room. In addition, it has a responsive community and many tutorials on its use are easily found on the Internet.

About FreeCAD

FreeCAD presents a work environment similar to CATIA, SolidWorks, SolidEdge, ArchiCAD, or Autodesk Revit.

Use parametric modeling techniques and it is provided with a modular software architecture, allowing easy addition of functionalities without having to change the core of the system.

Unlike traditional analytical CAD, such as AutoCAD or Microstation, FreeCAD is a parametric CAD that uses parameters to define its limits or actions.

In parametric design, each element of the drawing (walls, doors, windows, etc.) is treated as an object, which is not only defined by its spatial coordinates (x, y, z), but also by its parameters, whether these graphics or functional.

Object-related databases make this software, and especially your architecture workbench, closely related to the BIM approach, in which a BIM model contains the complete construction life cycle, from concept to the building.

FreeCAD has great file support In addition to FreeCAD's own file format, the following file formats can be handled: DXF, SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), STEP, IGES, STL (STereoLithography), OBJ (Wavefront), DAE (Collada), SCAD (OpenSCAD), IV (Inventor) and IFC.

New version of FreeCAD available

After two years of development from version 0.16, version 0.17 was released a few weeks ago, to be precise in the month of April. This version therefore brings quite significant changes to many tools.

Between the main improvements, modifications and features of this version we can highlight:

The PartDesign Parts Design Shop has been completely redesigned and redesigned, is more ergonomic and offers more tools.

The Sketcher drawing workshop also received quite a few changes. For example, it now allows the creation of B-splines, as well as hyperbola arcs and parabolic arcs.

FreeCAD 0.17

Sketches can now be attached to other non-planar faces, a new Carbon Copy tool allows you to copy geometry from another sketch.

The Part Workshop is not neglected in improvements. The Open Cascade kernel goes from version 6.8.0 to version 7.2.0.

Lnew features allow you to directly create composite solids (compsolids). The extrude tool now supports more directions, such as parametric normal or bound edge.

Un new extension manager greatly facilitates plug-in installation.

El new TechDraw technical drawing workshop Newcomer, it already offers more functions and is more ergonomic than its predecessor. The latter is still available, but will be removed in the future.

The FEM finite element analysis module has been migrated to Python 3 and also received bug fixes, you can see the addition of a »solver framework» written from scratch in a GSoC and gmsh which allows you to use the Gmesh tool within FreeCAD .

Many new and ergonomic features have been introduced, including one that allows users of the excellent KiCad to use FreeCAD features.

How to install FreeCAD 0.17 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and derivatives?
