Geary 3.36 arrives with an updated interface, Emoji and more

Geary

Recently the launch of the new version of the mail client “Geary 3.36” was announced which comes with some pretty cool changes such as a updated interface and responsive, drag and drop and copy and paste support for images in rich text messages, a context menu entry to insert emoji and improved detection of lost attachments

For those unaware of Geary, you should know that this is an email client which focuses its use on the Gnome desktop environment. Initially, the project was founded by the Yorba Foundation, which created the popular Shotwell photo manager, but later the development It passed into the hands of the Gnome community.

The objective of the project development is to create a product rich in capabilities, but at the same time extremely easy to use and that consumes a minimum of resources. The mail client is designed for both standalone use and to work in conjunction with email services web-based like Gmail and Yahoo! Mail.

The interface is implemented using the GTK3 + library. A SQLite database is used to store the message database; a full-text index is created to search the message database. To work with IMAP, a new GObject-based library is used, which works in asynchronous mode (mail download operations do not crash the interface).

The code is written in Vala and is distributed under the LGPL license. As for the compilations offered, we can find a repository for Ubuntu (PPA) and in the form of a standalone flatpak package.

What's new in Geary 3.36?

With the release of this new version it is highlighted that a new message writing interface has been implemented, which uses an adaptive design.

Another important change mentioned is that added support for inserting images into emails using drag and drop and through the clipboard, as well as that a context menu has been implemented to embed emoji, as well as the system to identify forgotten attachments was improved.

It is also mentioned that the ability to reverse the changes was significantly expanded (Undo).

Besides that added support for rollback of actions with emails, such as, mark, archive, move and undo he sent in 5 seconds (with this you can now cancel the sending of the email) and in 30 minutes, return the canceled compilation of the email. Rollback now also applies to any text field, such as search string, subject line, and recipient address.

Of the other changes that stand out of this new version:

  • By default, instead of single-key keyboard shortcuts, keyboard shortcuts use Ctrl keys (the old one-key control is close to Gmail and can be activated in settings).
  • Added the ability to open the interface to view correspondence in a separate window (by double clicking).
  • Redesigned interface with settings. Notification output configuration has been moved to the system configurator.
