GIMP 2.10.18 arrives with troubleshooting and a 3D transform tool

GIMP

The guys who are in charge of the development of GIMP, they made known by posting on the app's official website the release of the new corrective version of GIMP 2.10.18 which get to fix some bugs that are present in previous versions and also comes to present the integration of a new 3D transformation tool.

And is that GIMP developers did not announce version 2.10.16 last week, which I found strange since they usually make the announcements and this version passed by for many because we thought that it was only a minor corrective version that solved some small errors, but the thing was not like that.

So that in the announcement of this new version of GIMP 2.10.18 the developers mention following:

We skipped the 2.10.16 announcement due to a critical error. Together, the two updates offer several major usability improvements, a new tool for transformations in 3D space, a new version checker, and the usual number of bug fixes.

For those who are unfamiliar with GIMP, they should know that GIMP is a fairly popular image editor in the Linux world and perhaps the best Adobe Photoshop alternative., because after so many years of development it has achieved great acceptance by the Linuxera community.

With this, it has managed to position itself in one of the image editing applications that can be found in almost all the repositories of Linux distributions.

What's new in GIMP 2.10.18?

This new version of GIMP comes with quite good changes, since the GIMP developers seem to have listened to the requests of the users since one of the most requested functions was that the application had the support to group tools.

Besides that it is also mentioned that GIMP 2.10.18 already allows you to create and customize groups of tools, all you have to do is drag the tools between them.

For those who do not want this feature to be active, they can disable the grouping completely, in interface - toolbox - dialog box - preferences.

Another major change of this new version is the new option called "Composite Preview" that is available for most transformation tools.

This new feature allows rendering of transform preview with the correct position of the modified layer in the layer stack, as well as with the correct blending mode.

Last but not least, the new 3D transformation tool is also highlightedwhich is intended to help change the perspective of a layer or move it in 3D space as it allows you to set a vanishing point, then rotate the layer on the X, Y and Z axes.

Of the other changes that stand out from this new version:

  • Vastly improved user experience for transform preview
  • Dockable areas are now highlighted when dragging a dockable dialog
  • New 3D transform tool to rotate and move elements
  • Much smoother brush outline preview motion on canvas
  • Symmetry paint enhancements
  • Faster loading of ABR brushes
  • PSD support improvements
  • Consolidated user interface for merging and anchoring layers
  • Check for updates to notify users of new available releases
  • 28 bug fixes, 15 translation updates

How to install GIMP 2.10.18?

Gimp It is a very popular application so it can be found within the repositories of almost all Linux distributions. But as we know, application updates are not usually available soon within Ubuntu repositories, so this can take days.

Although all is not lost, since Gimp developers offer us the installation of their application by Flatpak.

The first requirement to install Gimp from Flatpak is that your system has support for it.

Already being sure of having Flatpak installed in our system, now yes we can install Gimp from Flatpak, we do this executing the following command:

flatpak install https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org.gimp.GIMP.flatpakref

Once installed, if you don't see it in the menu, you can run it using the following command:

flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP

Now if you already have Gimp installed with Flatpak and want to update to this new one version, they just need to run the following command:

flatpak update
