Gnome 3.18, now available

GNOME has long established itself as one of the desktop environments most used and attractive in GNU/Linux distributions. Therefore, we want to dedicate an entry to it in Ubunlog to see what's new in this new version. And, after several months of work, the new version 3.18 of Gnome is now available.

As we already told you a couple of weeks ago, one of the most striking novelties of Gnome 3.18 is inclusion of native Google Drive support in GNU / Linux, specifically in the Nautilus file manager.

In addition, another novelty is the integration of the so-called Linux Vendor Firmware Service with GNOME. With this software, it will now be easier for hardware manufacturers to distribute updates to firmware for Linux.

On a visual level, one of the characteristics that may not be appreciated at first is the automatic screen brightness. With this new implementation, users with devices that have light sensors will not have to worry about regulating the brightness of the screen, since it will be automatically regulated depending on the light that is outside.

Regarding new applications, we have to highlight the calendar, an application that was already present as a previous version in GNOME 3.16 but is now released as a final version, which also fully integrates with GNOME online accounts, Boxes an application to use virtual and remote machines, or Builder, the new GNOME IDE.

Apart from these notable new features, GNOME 3.18 has many more. If you want to see in depth all that we comment on in this post, you can access the GNOME 3.18 Release Notes.

In short, every time GNOME announces a new version, it is great news for Free Software, since as we can see in this post, the news from each time is more interesting. Also, as we well know, GNOME is Free Software, so we can access its source at your git page.
