GNOME 3.34 now available. These are the news that will come to Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine

GNOME 3.34

So and as expected, GNOME Project has released GNOME 3.34, the version of the graphical environment that Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine will use. The new version, codenamed Thessaloniki, Arrives with many new features, but there is one that stands out from the rest. Next we are going to explain the most outstanding news that comes along with the latest installment of one of the most popular graphical environments, not to say that it is the most popular of those available in the Linux world.

The biggest news and the one we don't want to wait to mention is performance related. Everyone who has tried GNOME 3.34 on a native operating system (not a virtual machine) agrees that it is much faster than previous versions. Apparently, in the case of Ubuntu, the work they started when they returned to GNOME after leaving Unity has been completed, so Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine will be what Ubuntu 18.10 should have been.

Highlights of GNOME 3.34

  • New icons. Many of the icons have been redesigned for this version. Related to this, we have the new yaru theme.
  • Really much improved performance.
  • Ability to create folders in the app launcher. This was a long-awaited function that will allow us to create groups of applications, such as putting VLC and Kdenlive (among others) in the Multimedia folder or Writer, Draw and Calc in the Office folder.
  • The panel for choosing wallpapers has been improved. The wallpapers section of the general settings will be clearer.
  • Adjustments are added on top. There will be some more settings available at the top, from where we access the notifications and calendar section.
  • GNOME app enhancements, among which we have:
    • Epiphany will allow us to fix tabs.
    • GNOME Music will allow us to see folders, among other things.
    • Calendar compatible with third-party services.
    • Responsive settings design; it changes depending on the size of the window.
    • GNOME Games will allow us to save several points from the same game.
    • The IRC Polari client will show clearer when we lose connection.
    • GNOME Boxes will add improvements such as 3D acceleration will be optional.
    • The terminal will support right-to-left or bi-directional writing languages.
    • Nautilus will show a warning when pasting into read-only folders.
  • They may disable corner actions, but via dconf.

When will it be available

The problem? KDE software users have easy options to install the latest versions of Plasma. For example, Kubuntu users can add the KDE Backports repository to install new versions of Plasma as soon as they are released; KDE neon ones use a special repository by default. Installing the latest version of GNOME is not easy at all, and it is best to wait for our Linux distribution to update its graphical environment.

If there are no surprises, and it seems that there will not be because the GNOME 3.34 beta is already available in Eoan Ermine's Daily Build, Ubuntu users can use the version released today from October 17. Fasten your seat belts.

Isn't it easy to install the new version?

    Have you heard of Flatpak?

In any case, the installation and update of packages has nothing to do with the desktop environment but with the distribution.
