GNOME 3.38, now available the desktop that will use Groovy Gorilla with many improvements

GNOME 3.38 on Ubuntu 20.10

Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla is already taking shape. And no, this article is not about the next version of Ubuntu, or not at all, since we are going to talk about the graphical environment that it will use, a GNOME 3.38 which has been officially released and has already been included in the preview versions of the next installment of the system being developed by Canonical. It comes with many new features, but one that is always interesting: improved performance.

Among the novelties, personally it strikes me that now includes a guide or tour in the form of an app so that we can learn how some things work, such as how to access applications from Activities. On the other hand, it is also interesting that the "Frequent" section of the application launcher has disappeared. You have another of the improvements of GNOME 3.38 after the hack.

Highlights of GNOME 3.38

Before starting with the list, it seems important to mention that some of these improvements will not be available in some distributions, since they are the same ones that decide what to add and what not. The most interesting news are:

  • New application to teach us how everything works.
  • Improved the application launcher, as explained in this link.
  • Improved support for fingerprint readers (more information).
  • Now we can restart the computer from a new option added in the system tray.
  • Possibility of showing the battery percentage without installing anything extra.
  • New parental controls that will allow us, for example, to restrict web browsers, some applications or prevent apps from being installed.
  • Support to share WiFi with QR codes.
  • Improvements in apps, such as Maps, Photos, Clock, Epiphany or the screenshot app that now comes with a renewed interface.
  • GNOME's built-in screen recorder now uses Pipewire.
  • The sound recorder has been redesigned.
  • Changes in the microphone icon to know if it is active or muted.
  • Some icons have been redesigned.
  • Monitor refresh management in Wayland has been improved.

GNOME 3.38 it's official y is now available in Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla, the version that is currently in development and whose official release is scheduled for October 22. Users interested in installing it can do so from its Flatpak version, but it is best to wait for our Linux distributions to include it as an update.
