GNOME Firmware: Project GNOME also prepares a tool to manage firmware in Linux

GNOME Firmware

Just over a week ago, System76 gave us Good news: They are creating a tool that will allow us to update the firmware on Linux operating systems. The proposal from the company that also develops Pop! _OS would be available as an extension to GNOME preferences and as a standalone application, but it will not be the only one. Project GNOME works on GNOME Firmware, which is basically the same as what System76 is developing, but only in its app version.

The information that it reaches us from the hand of Richard Hughes does not offer as many details as what Syste76 published in his day. He does tell us that Dell asked him if he wanted to work on a project with them this summer to manage firmware, since the GNOME and KDE software centers are very simple to show the firmware only when there are pending updates. Dell prefers something clearer, which also allows reverting to previous versions of it.

GNOME Firmware will allow you to update all types of firmware in Linux

Where yes seems There is interesting information in the screenshots: as you can see in the image that heads this article, the GNOME "Firmware Updater" shows us details of all the hardware of our equipment, including UEFI Device Firmware. The other capture is also interesting, where we see up to 5 different versions of the Lenovo ThinkPad P50 firmware with some descriptions that show us the news of the new version.

Firmware updater

Right now GNOME Firmware is just code and binaries, they are still working on the user interface and what kind of UX they want for the tool. It is almost complete and they expect to launch it in a few weeks. When the first stable version is available, Hughes says that they will upload the package to Flathub so we can use it on any compatible Linux distribution.
