Gnome Maps might not be present in Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS

Gnome maps

In the last few days, Gnome and Ubuntu Gnome users will have noticed how a useful desktop app has stopped working. This app is Gnome Maps. Gnome Maps has suffered a severe setback by running out of its map provider, MapQuest. This has caused the service to stop working and it will be until the Gnome team finds an alternative or a solution to the problem in question.

However, the solution is not easy because There are not many services equal to MapQuest or as good as MapQuest. So the Gnome team is already considering the possibility that Gnome Maps is not in the next Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS version, a version that is expected to be out on July 21.

Yes, it is true that there are many alternative projects to MapQuest such as OpenStreetMaps which are free and can be used in Gnome Maps to put an end to this problem, however its implementation is not so easy and users need a quick fix. So the alternative of removing the app from the famous desktop is a good temporary solution to this problem.

Gnome Maps could temporarily disappear from Ubuntu

In any case it means that Gnome Maps disappears completely from the desktop, that is, it may be best that Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS is not there but that it returns for the future 16.10 or for the future 17.04, we must not forget that Ubuntu 16.04 is an LTS version.

Personally, I don't use Gnome Maps, but of course users who use the app will be quite annoyed with it. Fortunately, with the advent of the snaps and click packages, many users will be able to use one V as a temporary substitute but also You can use the Google Maps application in case you are looking for an easier alternative to perform.
